  1. Results of WWI: Economic Depression & the Rise of FASCISM (Its supposed to be scary)

  2. The End of WWI • The “War of Attrition” • When the US joins the Allies the war shifts  Germany surrenders on November 11, 1918. • Horrible losses on both sides, Europe is destroyed. • Treaty of Versailles • Officially ends the war in 1919. • Blames everything on Germany • They have to pay HUGE reparations, give up territory, and downsize their army= Humiliated. • Aftermath: • The Kaiser in Germany abdicates  Weimar Republic. • Austria Hungary is broken up  No More Hapsburgs :’( • Ottoman Empire is broken up too. • + Don’t Forget Russia had a revolution too! • Wilson’s 14 Points= League of Nations

  3. World Wide Depression • Free Flow of Credit= Market Bubble. • Overproduction of goods caused a glut on the market. • When the U.S. Stock Market crashed in October of 1929, U.S. credit dried up, Europe ran out of money = Everybody hurting. • U.S. and Germany worst hit: Economy shrunk by half, almost 1/3 of the pop unemployed. • Countries tried to save themselves by imposing tariffs • Smoot-Hawley in the US- makes it more expensive (i.e. pointless) to buy foreign goods. • Other countries do the same- Global trade drops by 62% (THAT’S REALLY BAD)

  4. Depression in Non Industrial Countries • Industrialized countries weathered the depression by forcing colonial peoples to buy only their products. • Non Industrial countries that relied on raw material exports were hit very hard. • Ex. Malaya, Indochina & Dutch East Indies produced most of the worlds rubber. When Automobile production (in industrial nations) was cut in half, so was imports of that rubber = devastated economies. • Industrialization of some countries was set back by a decade or more. Don’t Have to Write!

  5. The Rise of FASCISM • What is it? • Main idea of fascism is to destroy the will of the individual in favor of “the people.” • Wanted a unified society rooted in extreme nationalism. • Why Fascism? • (scary) Russian Revolution + Economic upheaval + disillusion with modern life = people wanting to return to a mythical past. • Radical Politicians learned how to use propaganda to appeal to confused people. • Promised to bring back full employment, stop the spread of communism, & get territorial conquests denied to them by WWI. • Big Names: Benito Mussolini in Italy & Adolf Hitler in Germany
