Technical Session on EMF Introduction

This technical session explores the aim and history of the ITU-T's study on electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and provides guidelines for assessing human exposure. Workshop discussions and presentations cover areas such as measurement, calculation, national guidelines, and long-term measurement systems.

  1. Technical Session on EMFIntroduction Mitsuo Hattori Chairman of WP2/5 Geneva, 27 May 2009

  2. Aim of EMF Study in ITU-T SG5 • Provide high level framework for managing the human exposure to EMFs (regulatory practices) emitted by the telecommunication equipment • Provide guidelines for the assessment of human exposure based on the existing standards and recommendations • Activities specified in WTSA-08 Resolution 72 in order to assist developing countries in human exposure assessment.

  3. History of Study on EMF in ITU-T • New Question on EMF has started on 1996 and studying for 3 periods. • Three Recommendations have established and revised since then. • K.52: Guidance on complying with limits for human exposure to electromagnetic fields   • K.61: Guidance on measurement and numerical prediction of electromagnetic fields for compliance with human exposure limits for telecommunication installations • K.70: Mitigation techniques to limit human exposure to EMFs in the vicinity of radiocommunication stations

  4. Workshop on EMF • Two Workshops were held. • First Workshops was held on 2001 in Hanoi with EMC and safety issues. • New study on EMF was introduced. • Second Workshop was held on 2007 in Geneva. • Key persons from various organizations active within the EMF health effects domain (WHO, CENELEC, IEC etc.) were invited. • Aimed to increase understanding and alignment, reduce potential duplication of standardization effort among organizations. • Taking into account new Resolution 72, Workshop specially addressing developing country is agreed to be held in last meeting, but changed to TS.

  5. Program of theTechnical Session • Comparison between measurement and calculations; EMF-estimator (Fryderyk Lewicki) • Measurement is to present EMF exposure level in Cote d'Ivoire (Guy Michel Kouakou) • National Guidelines for Human Exposure to Radiofrequency (Tariq Alamri) • Electromagnetic fields Automatic Long Term Measurement System (Josef Opitz) • EMF considerations in Latin America Countries (Héctor Mario Carril) • Conclusions, Questions, comments (All speakers)
