  2. Four ways to Electronically File • Taxpayer has the option to choose: • e-File • I-File • TeleFile • On-line Filing using Retail Software (PC)

  3. Electronic filing benefits • Acknowledgment that return has been received • Corrections are made at the time of filing to help reduce errors • File now, pay by due date

  4. Direct Deposit • Only offered with Electronic filing • Receive refund in about 10 days • Refund can be deposited into checking or savings account • More cost effective and faster than paper checks

  5. I-File • www.revenue.state.il.us • Free, only requirement is access to the Internet • Social Security and Personal Identification Number are used as signature • Secure site, access is limited to six attempts

  6. TeleFile • Social Security and Personal Identification Number used as signature • Three tries are given to enter valid access information, after three tries call will terminate • Six-digit confirmation number as proof-of-filing

  7. On-line Filing using Retail Software (PC) • Software can be purchased via a retailer or downloaded from the Internet for a fee • Software must be approved and tested by both the IRS and IDOR • Social security and Personal Identification Number used as signature

  8. Credit Cards • Separate toll free telephone call (1-888-2PAYTAX) • Convenience fee of about 2% will be incurred by the taxpayer • Requires jurisdiction code 2300, which can be found in the IL-1040

  9. 2-D Bar Codes • Implemented January 2000 • Software must be approved by Illinois Department of Revenue • Important to follow 2-D guidelines and standards • Anticipated volume: 250,000 returns

Future Expansions • Expand e-file, I-File, and PC File to 95% eligible population • Expand TeleFile program criteria to 1.6 million taxpayers • Expansion of I-File program to business applications • Expansion of payment options to include direct debits • Expansion of 2-D Bar Code program for individual and business tax applications
