    1. Waves and the Doppler Effect

    2. Waves Waves transfer energy from one place to another. Most waves need a medium to travel in: sound waves travel through air, water, etc. ocean waves travel through water Light waves do not need a medium, so they travel easily through space.

    3. Wave Properties Waves have four properties:

    8. Wave Properties Waves have four properties:

    9. The Doppler Effect Objects are heard because they emit sound in all directions. The sound waves are the same in all directions for a stationary object.

    10. The Doppler Effect When an object is moving, sound waves will “pile up” in front of the object.

    11. The Doppler Effect When an object is moving, sound waves will “drag out” behind the object.

    12. The Doppler Effect and Stars The effect is the same with stars, but instead of listening to sound waves we are looking at light waves.

    13. The Doppler Effect and Stars The light waves “pile up” in front of the moving star. The light waves therefore are perceived to have a higher frequency and thus look bluer to the observer.

    14. The Doppler Effect and Stars The light waves “drag out” behind the moving star. The light waves therefore are perceived to have a lower frequency and thus look redder to the observer.

    21. Sir Edwin Hubble Astronomer Sir Edwin Hubble (1889-1953) did just that for many many stars.

    22. When he plotted the stars’ and galaxies’ speeds against their distances, Hubble found that the farther the star or galaxy is from Earth, the faster it is receding. This relationship is called Hubble’s Law. Hubble’s Law

    23. The Expansion of the Universe Because farther objects are seen to move away more quickly, astronomers concluded the universe must be expanding. This theory was supported by the discovery of the Cosmic Background Radiation in 1964.
