The caves are situated in the typical temperate-zone. This karstic system is an extremely rare combination of tropical and glacial climatic effects making it possible to study geological history over tens of millions of years. The variety of formations and the fact that they are concentrated in a restricted area mean that the 712 caves make up an outstanding example of long-lasting natural processes.
Caves included are • Baradla and Domica complex • Gombasek cave • Silica Ice cave • Dobšiná cave • Ochtina Aragonite cave • Jasov cave
Baradla-Domica cave Baradla-Domica cave complex is 21 km long with approximately one fourth of that on the Slovakian side and the rest in Hungary. The first written mention of Baradla cave dates back to 1549 and from 1920 it serves as a tourist attraction. Ján Majko discovered Domica Cave (Slovakian part of the complex) in 1926 and the tourist circuit opened to public in 1932 has more than 1700 metres. The cave was inhabited as far as 5000 BC and is an important archeological site. The temperature in the Slovakian part varies between 10°C and 12,3°C with a humidity above 95%.
This UNESCO World Heritage site includes seven components. They are Aggtelek, Szendrő-Rudabánya Hill and Esztramos Hill in Hungary and Dobšinská Ice Cave, Koniar plateau, Plešivec plateau and Jasov in Slovakia. Hungary
The tour is recommended to those visitors who would like to experience the atmosphere of the karst by discovering the hidden values of the surface and the underground world and also the connections among them. A surface tour between the ticket office and the cave entrance makes it possible to get to know the typical kast formations and habitats of the surface. There is Aggtelek.
The cave, which is indeed a canyon of an underground stream, is rich in stalactites, spaghetti dripstones and dripstone crusts mostly coloured orange by iron-oxide. The first 400 m section of the cave can be visited by walking on a lighted pavement, however, hiking boots are recommended throughout the whole tour. In the Baradla-cave there are always some music concerts which is a fantactic experience.
