CAVEs Cave automatic virtual environments
What is a cave? • An immersive virtual reality environment where projectors are directed to three, four, five, or all six of the walls of a cube shaped room. • Most times, users wear special glasses inside the CAVE to see 3D graphics • Electromagnetic sensors track the user’s movements and the video projections are adjusted accordingly • Sound effects and sometimes even smell and air movement add to the experience.
When was the cave developed and why? • First developed in the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Chicago in 1992 • CAVE was developed in response to a challenge for scientists to create and display a one-to-many visualization tool that utilized large projection screens. • The concept of the original CAVE has been reapplied for the last 20 years and is currently being used in a variety of fields. • Medicine • Aviation • History museums • Art installations
Cave used in medicine • Doctors can virtually see inside a person’s body and even inside organs. • New York’s Weill Cornell Medical College • Mayo Foundation’s VRASP CAVE: A 3D Virtual View Inside the Body
Cave used for training/test simulations • Virtual environments can also be used for training simulators, such a flight simulators or battlefield simulators. • Also can be used for visually testing component parts of newly developed engineering projects
Bottom line • The technology behind CAVEs will only improve and people in all fields will find more and more ways to use CAVEs to simulate reality for education and training.
