  1. CCU EEAA Assessment ofVulnerability & Adaptation of Agricultural production in Egypt to Climate ChangesSamir TantawiEgyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA)Egypt

  2. Outline • Methodology • Basic climatic information for Vulnerability Measures • Vulnerability due to Warming • Vulnerability due to Dryness • Vulnerability due to losses of Fertile Lands • Assessments of Emissions • Measures to facilitate Adequate Adaptation to Climate Change in Agricultural Sector

  3. Vulnerabilities Assessment Methodology: 1- Overview of the first National Communication. 2- Definition of causes & relevant study aspects to vulnerabilities . 3- Relations between physical mechanisms & impacts. 4- Information on the role of the institutions involved & the process of data collection & archiving. 5- Specification of Response strategies.

  4. Basic climatic information for Vulnerability Measures 1- Vulnerability due to warming. 2- Vulnerability due to Dryness. 3- Vulnerability due to losses of agricultural lands. 4- Vulnerabilities due to increased activity of insects & spreading of plant diseases. 5- Problems of agricultural waste disposal.

  5. Vulnerability due to Warming(Distribution of Temperature Trend Coefficient on Annual scale) Warming

  6. Vulnerability due to Dryness(Distribution of Relative Humidity Trend Coefficient on Annual scale) +

  7. Vulnerability due to losses of Fertile Lands

  8. Assessments of Emissions The following procedures will be followed: 1- Description of the source & sink categories, methodologies, emission factors & activity data used in their estimation of emissions. 2- Tabulation of the GHG emission values from different sources & different sectors. 3- Identification of the areas where data may be further improved in future communication through capacity building. 4- Definitions of the levels of uncertainty & methods of increasing precision.

  9. Measures to facilitate Adequate Adaptation to Climate Change in Agricultural Sector (EGYPT) 1- Protection of the Northern coast of EGYPT. 2- Preference of vegetable cultivation in the areas near sea coast, since the roots of crops & trees due to intrusion of saline water. 3- Preference of diversified farms with more than one crop to increase the ability to cop with drought.

  10. Continued 4- Farms with trees planted strategically between crops could be a good solution for saving shade & sequestration of excess CO2 . 5- Variation of crop distribution , replacement with new crops that can bear additional warming could be another solution to adaptation in EGYPT to Climate Change. 6- Changing of Irrigation systems in Egypt to save evaporated water.
