March 2014 LCCU Meeting • Securing Windows XP after end of support & • What to do if you absolutely can’t, or won’t, give up XP after updates end on 4/8/2014: • Preferably, disconnect it from the internet, otherwise • Use a third-party internet security suite after June 6, 2015 – Security Essentials will update until then, most security companies will continue after. • Run on-demand antivirus scanners weekly, Malwarebytes Antimalware, Superantispyware, etc.

March 2014 LCCU Meeting • Securing Windows XP after end of support. • Use an alternative browser – Firefox, Chrome. • Protect browser against scripts with NoScript Security Suite for Firefox or NotScripts for Chrome. • Clear internet cache frequently – use CCleaner. • Use alternatives to built-in software • Media players – VLC Media Player, etc. • Windows Explorer - Free Commander, etc. • Email clients – Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.

March 2014 LCCU Meeting • Securing Windows XP after end of support. • Keep software up-to-date – use Secunia PSI. • Make files show their extensions - Control Panel, Folder Options, View, uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types”. • Disable Remote Desktop – Control Panel, System, Remote tab, uncheck “Allow remote assistance…”. • Use a standard account instead of administrative – Control Panel, User Accounts, account type: Limited

March 2014 LCCU Meeting • How to restore Win XP backups to Win XP, 7. or 8, and copy a Windows XP system backup. • See “How to use the backup utility in Windows XP.” • File created is Backupnn.bkf, where nn is 01, 02, etc. • If restoring backup to WinXP from flash drive with exFAT format, update in KB995704 must have been applied. All Vista and Win 7/8 PCs support exFAT. • If restoring to Win 7 or Vista, download & install the Windows NT Backup-Restore Utility, which will then be found under Accessories, System Tools.

March 2014 LCCU Meeting • How to restore Win XP backups to Win XP, 7. or 8, and copy a Windows XP system backup. • If restoring to Win 8, copy files from a Win XP PC: ntbackup.exe, ntmsapi.dll, vssapi.dll to a folder, e.g. NTBackup, you create in C:\Windows\system32, or download nt5backup.cab and unzip it there. Then run ntbackup.exe and ignore (click OK) to “Removable Storage not Running” . See Restore a Windows XP Backup in Windows 8 for details on running the restore. Can restore individual files.
