  1. English Higher Student Guide

  2. Course Content: • The successful student in Higher English will have achieved outcomes in each of the component units. • The award of Higher English will be based on a combination of internal and external assessment. To gain the award you must achieve a pass in all component units of the course as well as external assessment.

  3. Course Entry Levels: • Credit grade 1 or 2 at Standard Grade. Performance in Reading and Writing should be at least a grade 2. • Intermediate 2 English at grades A or B.

  4. Objective – to understand, analyse and evaluate non-fiction. Internal Assessment – you must obtain 50% of the marks to gain a pass. External Assessment – Paper 1 – Close Reading. This is worth 50% of the total marks available over the two papers. Unit 1 – Language Study.Outcome 1 – Close Reading.

  5. Internal Assessment only. You are required to compose 1 piece of writing which is either expressive, creative or a report. Expressive – personal reflective, persuasive or argumentative. Creative – piece of prose fiction, poem(s) or drama script. Report – on agreed topic. Unit 1: Outcome 2 – Writing.

  6. Objective – to respond critically to unseen imaginative texts. Text – will be either prose, poetry or drama. Internally assessed. You must obtain over 50% of the marks in order to gain a pass. Unit 2 – Literary Study.Outcome 1 – Textual Analysis.

  7. Objective to respond critically to imaginative texts you have studied in class. Prose, poetry, drama or media texts. Externally assessed. Critical Essay (Paper II). Choose 2 from different genres. Paper II worth 50% of the marks in the exam. Unit 2: Outcome 2 – Critical Essay.

  8. Unit 3 – Personal Study. • Objective – to review critically your own choice of text. • Internally assessed under controlled conditions.
