  2. Gettysburg Gettysburg was a three-day battle. It was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War Most people see Gettysburg as the turning point of the war.

  3. Day 1 The battle began on July 1st , 1863 General Lee lead the Confederates, while George Meade led the Union troops. Day one ended in Lee forcing the Union troops into retreat mode

  4. Day 2 Day two began with the Union in a defensive formation, and Lee launching an assault on the Union Despite significant loss, the Union held their defences. http://www.gdg.org/Images/Research/Maps/gb1913.jpg

  5. Day 3 Battles resumed on Day 3 Around 3pm, 12,500 Southern soldiers stepped from the ridgeline and advanced, this is know as “Pickett's Charge” The Union halted the charge, resulting ina devastating defeat for the South.

  6. Sherman's March General Sherman pushed his troops south toward Atlanta. Sherman used total war, destroying everything in your path, to defeat the Southerners. Why might have Sherman decided to use total war?

  7. Sherman cont Union soldiers tore up railroad tracks, blew up bridges, burned barns, destroyed crops, and killed livestock. After taking Atlanta, Sherman and his troops marched though South Carolina and North Carolina heading toward Richmond.

  8. Surrender By spring of 1865 the Confederates could take no more. April 9th 1865 Lee and Grant meet at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia agreeing to these terms of surrender. 1. Southern soldiers must give up their weapons 2. Southern soldiers could keep horses or mules if they owned them 3. Southern Officers could keep their pistols 4. Southern soldiers would be fed. What other terms of surrender occurred? Why were these terms agreed on?

  9. Activity You will be divided into groups of three to four people. Each group will chose a different time in histroy when total war was used (verify your example with me before you began research). You will then be expected to give a short presentation to the class on your example, tell us about the war, why total war was used, and how it affected both sides as well as the outcome of the war.
