Wilma Rudolph Wilma Rudolph, one of 22 children in her family, grew up in poverty during the 1940s in Clarksville, Tennessee. She was born prematurely on June 23, 1940 in St. Bethlehem, Tennessee. She weighed 4 1 /2 pounds . When Wilma was born the diagnosed her with brain cancer . Her mother was told Wilma will never be cable to walk . In the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Tennessee State University Hall of Famer and highly recognized Tigerbelle, and Wilma Rudolph . She was a Three- time Olympic gold medalist Wilma Rudolph, rated one of the best female athletes . On September 7, 1960, Wilma Rudolph made Olympic history by becoming the first African American woman to be known as the worlds best female runner . Wilma died because of Cancer on November 24 , 1994 .
