  1. Tips on making presentations By Marlene Beck

  2. 1. Avoid filler words and non-words Such as ‘uhm’, and ‘ya know’.

  3. 2. • Be natural and relaxed and gesture to emphasise key points. • Don’t distract the audience by being as stiff as a soldier at attention or a fidgeting bundle of nerves.

  4. 3 • Make eye contact with as many people as you can. • Let your eyes meet with the eyes of audience members for a least five seconds or for a complete thought. This makes you look confident, establishes rapport, provides you with some feedback and personalises your information.

  5. 4 • Move around a bit to release tension, but avoid rocking, shuffling or pacing back and forth.

  6. 5. • Project your voice strongly and clearly so your audience can hear you and articulate your words clearly ; people won’t bother straining to hear or understand you for very long.

  7. 6. • Relax and be yourself

  8. 7. • Refer to your notes when you need them, but avoid reading out your presentation word for word.

  9. 8. • Speak in a conversational tone that shows enthusiasm and commitment to your topic ; a low-level, monotone or lifeless voice is guaranteed to put even the kindest audience to sleep.
