Grand Khan Bazaar- Egypt • Being whisked away to the Grand Khan Bazaar in Cairo’s ancient alleyways is sure to delight one’s senses. Plumes of sandalwood incense and thick smoke from hookah shops stream though the tangled, labyrinth-like corridors of stalls selling it all: mirrored clinking belly dance skirts, thick wool carpets, chunky salt from the Dead Sea, azure lapiz lazuli and fiery tiger’s eye pendants and heaps of textiles and silks. The cacophony of bargainersand coins, roosters clucking and flutes whistle and echo. The heat sticks to the old stones and the aroma of grilled meats, piquant olives, sugared fruits and dried sesame cakes follow me through the darkened tunnels. Here you can bargain hard and laugh loud with the locals in this other-worldly market and treasures will be found.
Rubric- 20 point formal • ______/5 Topic sentence that introduces the place • ______/5 Vivid sensory language (sight, smell, taste, touch, hear) • ______/5 Setting details and sense of place is real • ______/5 Art is neat, colorful, and shows effort
