XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Race Definitions “In Xuan Zang’s Footsteps International Business Schools Gobi Challenge” is a hiking race held in the Gansu Province, from Ta’er Temple in Gua Zhou County to the White Gate Pillar at the outskirts of Gobi in Chengbei County. An Outdoor Sporting Race consists of different outdoor activities such as cross-country races, river crossings (swimming or canoeing), mountain biking, obstacle courses, rock climbing, abseiling, camping etc. This race is derived from the fundamentals of the various outdoor activities and seeks to showcase persistence and determination in the skills of outdoor sportsmen, and emphasises the esprit de corps of team members participating in this modern sporting activity.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Race Objectives • This race supports teams who can work creatively within their team, and places a strong emphasis on fair competition. • When there is a conflict between team creativity and fair competition, race regulations will hold the maintenance of fair competition as top priority
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Requirements for Participation • Skilled in operating basic outdoor equipment, such as GPS, walkie-talkies, tent-building, efficient use of physical capabilities throughout the journey etc; • Healthy and able to withstand the most severe physical loads; • Responsible for the safety of himself and others, building tents within the zone demarcated by the race committee; • The race route is part of the culture conservation area, littering and vandalising cultural artifacts are strictly forbidden. Offenders will be stripped of their rights to compete.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Timekeeping and Scoring (1) • Electronic Timekeeping System • Each participant is issued a finger-card. Upon commencement of the race, the participants will tap the card at the same time to record their time of departure. • At each checkpoint and finishing point, participants must tap their cards to get a time stamp. At the finishing point, they must print their scores for the day. Participants who lack any checkpoint time stamps or who lose their finger-cards will not be issued with the day’s scores and will not achieve a rank in the final results. • Race Completion • All participants must complete the race events for that particular day according to the requirements of the route before the gates close. • Participants who are unable to complete the race events for that day (including those who board transportation vehicles, withdrew due to injuries, withdrew due to inability to achieve objectives within a given time frame or who have been stripped of their rights to compete) may continue participating in subsequent events but will no longer have the rights to be ranked for team or personal performance.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Timekeeping and Scoring (2) Race Groupings Participants may register to be in either Group A or B, with a limit of 10 participants in each group. Participants in Group A will be ranked for team performance and personal performance while participants in Group B will be ranked solely on personal performance. Scoring System - Team scores for the day for participating teams will be based on the score of the sixth active team member to reach the finishing point. The team’s total score is the sum of the team’s scores for the three days - All participants who complete the entire race will be eligible for personal performance ranking: total personal score is the sum of the effective score for each of the three days Departure Sequence Teams draw lots on Orientation Day to determine departure sequence on Day 1. On Day 1, participants will depart as a team one by one according to the departure sequence. The departure sequence for subsequent days will be determined by the previous day’s performance ranking.

XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Points to Note in the Use of Equipment Walkie-Talkie and GPS • Must be kept on-hand the entire journey. If any participant is short of such equipment, he must travel with another participant; • All participants must be skilled in the use of the walkie-talkie and the GPS. An equipment usage proficiency test will be conducted prior to the race; Lamp and Rescue Whistle Must be kept on-hand the entire journey. Even in the day, participants must carry the lamp on their person. Hiking Pole Not mandatory equipment, but it is recommended that two poles be used to conserve energy
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Equipment – Provided by the Committee • Leader’s Bib The champion for the preceding day wears the leader’s bib when they depart the following day • Walkie-Talkie The Committee will only provide 1 committee walkie-talkie to the leader of each academic institution and the leaders of Groups A and B • Electronic Timekeeping System The Committee will provide each participant with a finger-card for timekeeping purposes.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Race Route • Navigation Points and Navigation Route The adjudication team will provide the first team and team leaders the GPS navigation points for the entire race as well as suggested routes to complete the race. Participants may choose the most appropriate route during the race, but must go through the designated checkpoints and avoid areas which the committee marks as dangerous or liable to violation of related rules. • Checkpoints To ensure the safety of participants and fairness of the race, all participants must get their time stamps during their arrival at the checkpoint Ration Station Provides participants with food, beverages and medical services
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Aid from Neutral Parties Participants may seek aid from any neutral party. “Neutral Parties” include fitness advisors, medical personnel • Eg 1: In the course of the race, participants may not accept food, beverages, tools or aid in any form from the team leader, friends, managers or other non-neutral parties. • Eg2: Except for race adjudicators, participants may not leave rations or tools at any part of the race route.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Medical Aid and Emergencies • Medical Personnel have the right to interview and examine participants: participants must stop competing temporarily in order to submit to the interview and examination by medical personnel. Medical Personnel have the rights to request participants to stop competing and to rest, or to withdraw from the competition according to the findings of their examination. • In cases of medical emergencies, team members in the vicinity must stop racing until aid arrives on-site. • If sudden weather changes or any other events that may affect the safety of the race occurs, the race committee reserves the right to pause or terminate the race. Participants will have to follow instructions from the adjudication team and other committee personnel to gather at a safe location.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Ration Station Ration stations will be set up along the race route everyday. Participants must follow the following regulations: • Participants must throw all rubbish into the bins provided or into their own backpacks. Rubbish must not be left on the route. • Ration stations provide drinking water, energy cordials and fruit. Participants must carry the rations they need on the course in their backpacks.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Number Tags Throughout the race, all participants must adhere to the following regulations regarding the wearing of number tags provided by the committee: • Number tags must be worn on the outermost layer of clothing • Except at ration stations and at finishing point, the number tag must not be removed at any point on the route or at any other place
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Ranking and Awards The race organisers will award the top three teams and the top three performers in the A and B groups with certificates and prizes.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Adjudication The adjudicators in this race include: • Arbitration Committee: appointed by the race committee, responsible for authenticating and approving the qualifications of the adjudicators and making the final decision on actions by any participant that are contrary to the race regulations • Head adjudicator: responsible for delegating and supervising the duties of all adjudicators • Adjudicators: responsible for registration, starting point, ending point, checkpoints, race equipment and other related jobs. Responsible for ensuring race regulations are upheld within their scope of rights and appointment.
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Pre-Race Preparations • Physical FitnessRunning, Swimming, Long-distance hiking training • EquipmentPrepare and learn how to use the equipments listed in the Equipment List • Specialised Skills GPS settings/navigation, moving techniques when using two hiking poles • Team spirit Familiarisation with team member’s physical fitness and task allocation • Battle plan Simulate battle plans and strategies
XuanZang’s Footsteps –Ambition-Action-Determination Energy and Water • Energy Replenishment during the race • Mainly in the form of carbohydrates, e.g. steamed buns; combined with portions of fat and protein such as sausages, dried fruits etc • Drinking Water Replenishing electrolytes and trace elements is very important. Besides drinking water, energy drinks may also be consumed. • Daily Water Intake Daily water intake must not be less than 4 litres; When drinking water, consuming small amounts frequently is recommended. Drink 100 to 150ml of water every 20 to 30 minutes.
