SOCIAL NETWORKING Presented By Danny Becker
WHAT IS SOCIAL NETWORKING? • New form of technology to educate students • Utilizes the web as a source of information and learning • Mediums such as Myspace or Facebook enable students to engage in interactive learning and become confident in using technology effectively
MYSPACE • One of the earliest forms of social networking available • The number of people using Myspace has increased over the last few years, as has its potentials as a way of interacting and connecting with people • People are constantly finding new ways to utilize Myspace in regards to the field of education within the classroom environment(Techniques, 2007)
FACEBOOK • Succeeded Myspace, offering features not available to Myspace or other Social Networks • Targeted towards a more mature demographic • “Groups" are a notable feature that allow different people who share similar ideas to exchange concepts and views with one another. • This feature can be utilized to effectively enhance student’s understanding of a particular topic (Barret, 2006)
HOW ARE SOCIAL NETWORKS UTILIZED? • Social Networks use blogs and groupsto connect people and ideas • Students are therefore exposed to a number and variety of sources on different areas of study • Student learning is not limited to merely the teachings of one teacher (Mitrano, 2008)
ADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL NETWORKING • Encourages interaction in cyberspace, and promotes development with skills in dealing with technology • Students are encouraged to socialise with one another, as well as explore many ideas and concepts with students that they may never in fact get to meet were Social Networking not available • Students have the freedom to express their ideas and opinions without fear of direct scrutiny or criticism face to face(Mitrano, 2008)
DISADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL NETWORKING • Myspace and Facebook pose potential sources of distraction to students with non-educationally based features • The primary function of these social networks is to create a way in which people can interact socially: the development of educational benefits is secondary to the social appeal in Social Networking • Cyber-bullying is also a concern when utilizing Social Networking, and must be monitored and stoped wherever it is occuring(Goddard,2008)
POPULARITY IN SCHOOLS • Social Networking is relatively new, and as such few schools have effectively implement it as a core aspect to their teaching, especially since there are still many problems associated with networking (eg- younger student's distraction) • However, the concept itself is encouraging, and schools are becoming more and more accepting of the idea of Social Networking as a source of education, and are experimenting and trialing its uses within schools(Techniques, 2007)
