The Shah of Iran’s role in government • Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi accepted the role as the Shah of Iran in 1941 after Russia and Brittan forced his father Reza Shah to step down due to his relationship with Germany. • Because of the time period and the heavy tension in the middle east due to religion and the cold war the Shah started what he called the White Revolution • During the white revolution the Shah created oil deals with Brittan and America, Strengthened the secret Police, and appointed prime ministers loyal to him. • The Reforms that were passed by the White revolution had had to do with with the abolition of Feudalism (which helped small farmers), Privatization of Gov. owned Company's, Women's right to vote, the Literacy Corps, Houses of Equity(elected elders who solved minor problems), improving education, and Social Security
The reasons for his overthrow • He established a one party system and got rid of their multi party system of Gov. • He created a strong secret police force named SAVAK which tortured and executed opponents of the Shah, censored books, and surveyed Iranian people and political opponents. • His policy's in the White Revolution while benefiting the country as a whole, hurt the middle classes and upper classes while benefiting the larger lower class.
The overthrows impact • It created a Theocratic Republic that has a President and a constitution with its own laws but the laws of Islam. • Allowed for many political party's to be accepted in Iranian elections. • The overthrow caused a negative effect on our relationship with Iran because we were friends with the Shah. • The women of Iran have lost many rights and are forced to be segregated from men and may be put to death for pre-marital sex. • Iran’s economy is not doing as well in the new government and they still depend on oil. • Iraq attacked Iran; thinking that Iran would be weak after the revolution; and started a 8 year war between the two country's
