Dual Language Immersion What is it? • What it is NOT • A separate class • ESL or ELL • A Gifted and Talented Program • A Special Education or Remedial Program • A brand new idea • Cost prohibitive
What is Dual Language Immersion? • Modeled after Utah program • Two languages and two teachers in one day • One or two classrooms will be monolingual • 50% in second language • Math, Science, Civics and second language literacy 50% in English • English literacy and reinforcement of other topic’s vocab • Taught by native or highly advanced speakers who are certified elementary teachers • Genius – Children’s ability to learn a second language is at a peak level
Where is DLI in Casper? • Current program at Paradise Valley Elementary kindergarten started August 2013 • Making progress to implement Spanish at Park Elementary August 2014 • Must be in medium to large school • Must have two DLI and one Monolingual classrooms (keeps options open for parents) • K (and maybe 1st) with grade added each year • Children are….. “linguistic geniuses”

Other States - examples • Utah (5 years) • 20,000 in 4 languages • Delaware • Governor has made this an economic initiative • $1.9MM annually with goal of 8,000 students in Mandarin and Spanish • Oregon • Programs in Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, French, Russian and German. Possibly adding Vietnamese in near future in Portland • Idaho and Arizona are beginning programs

DLI Enrollment Process • Attend a DLI general information session • Commit to the program by signing the Program Enrollment List. Contact Beth Millay at NCSD Enrollment office for necessary paperwork (307-253-5322) • During the open enrollment stage, list Paradise Valley DLI as your school of choice for Mandarin and Park Elementary DLI for Spanish. • If entering after kindergarten enrollment, contact Principal Aaron Wilson 253-1200
