  1. Welcome to Ancient History 2012 – Paul Farrell

  2. Who Am I? Started teaching in 1979. Have an Arts degree in History from Sydney University. Currently working as an HSIE teacher at Marist College in Bexley.

  3. What will we Study? • There are 2 components to the HSC course. • Preliminary (year 11) • HSC (year 12) • You will be doing a very brief unit on the Preliminary course. This will include the overview and an introduction to some concepts we need to cover to do well. • You CANNOT move onto the HSC course unless you PASS the Preliminary component and yes – I will fail you if you do not make a serious attempt.

  4. Preliminary Course We will be looking at Preserved Human Remains as well as Issues of Preservation and Ownership of Artefacts. To pass Preliminary you will need to complete an assessment in 4 weeks time on archaeology and sources.

  5. HSC Course • The HSC and Trial Exam is 3 hours long. • There are 4 sections: • The Core – 25% • Personality Study – 25% • Society – 25% • Historical Period – 25%

  6. The Core The Core is a topic that everyone in the state studies. The topic is Cities of Vesuvius – Pompeii and Herculaneum. The HSC exam is a source study – this is the first time you will do 10 multiple choice questions plus an extended response based on sources you are given and your own knowledge.

  7. Society Study This section looks closely at many aspects of an ancient society such as government, religion, women, military, economy etc. This year we will be looking at Spartan Society. The HSC exam requires you to answer 4 OR 5 questions of ascending value. The last question is an extended response.

  8. Personality Study This section is based on the specific study of a an ancient personality. This year we will be looking at Xerxes The HSC exam requires you to write 2 or 3 extended responses (either 10 & 15 marks OR 5, 10 & 10 marks).

  9. Historical Period This section looks at a specific time period in History and you study in depth all of the relevant significant events. This year we will be looking at The Greek World 500-440BC. The HSC exam requires you to write a formal essay for this – you get a choice of 2 questions to answer in this section only.

  10. Assessment A guide will be given to you soon. You will do a test for Preliminary. HSC – you must attempt all assessment tasks. Each will be weighted as a %. They will all add up to 100% - that means you get a mark /100 to be sent to the BOS for your assessment. Your ranking in the class is often more important than the mark.

  11. Assessment procedure Your must be present for all assessment tasks. If you are absent you must contact Ken and provide a doctors certificate. You can only be away for a genuine illness or an absolute emergency. Anything that could be done at another time (including driving someone home) isn’t an acceptable excuse. If you reason isn’t genuine you will still have to do the task to satisfy BOS requirements but your result will be 0 (zero) for that task. This WILL affect your overall ranking.

  12. Types of tasks & text book • You will have to do • A research task • A source study • Tests under exam conditions. • Text books • You will not need to purchase any textbooks this year.

  13. Class times We begin at 5.30 sharp – After 2 weeks unexplained absence you will need to see Ken to explain you absence and justify your continued place in this class. Dinner time is 7.00 -7.30pm – just time for you to get your dinner and return to class. We should end around 9.15pm but it may be shorter or longer depending on how much you have done.   14. My email • As I work full time in a school I am only at Bankstown on Tuesday night. • Please be courteous and email me if you know you will be away. I don’t replace lost worksheets!

  15. Any questions??? Ask questions at any time that you are confused about something. BE WARNED - you do need to be here almost every lesson to keep up – with only one class a week, we cover a lot each lesson and I don’t have time to go over work very often.
