  1. August 16, 2013 (7th Grade) Agenda • DSJ #1 • Observing

  2. DSJ Instructions • Every day you will spend the first five minutes of class writing a response to a prompt in a form of a journal entry. The paragraph you write will inform, explain, describe or compare a concept from your science class. The sentences included in your paragraph are the following: • An introduction (1 sentence). Reword the prompt to help you get started. • Continue with three (3 sentences) “supporting principles” that supports and describes your introduction. This is the “Body” and supporting claims of your introductory paragraph. • End with a conclusion (1 sentence), which may include rewording your introduction response.

  3. DSJ Instructions • EXAMPLE OF A GOOD PARAGRAPH • Prompt: What did you do this summer vacation? • Student Response: • Introduction: This summer vacation I did many things. (1)** • Supporting sentences (Body): First, I didn’t have to repeat any classes at school.(2)** Second, I traveled to Mexico to visit my family and made new friends. (3)** Finally, I got to go to the beach and learned to swim. (4)** • Conclusion: These are just a few things I did this summer. (5)**

  4. Daily Science Journal (DSJ) • For the purpose of today’s DSJ, since most students may not have notebooks yet, you will do this DSJ on a separate piece of paper. • In the top corner, write your name, period, and today’s date. Title your paper “DSJ #1”

  5. DSJ #1 • Prompt: Imagine that you are a detective that is arriving at a crime scene. What are some skills that you need to have in order to do your job well? Explain in 5 sentences or more.
