  1. Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership Program Evaluation Update & Next Steps Carl Hanssen Hanssen Consulting, LLC April 2/3, 2009 The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP) is supported with funding from the National Science Foundation.

  3. Where are we? • MMP efforts have been ongoing for 6 years since 2003 • This is the 5th year we have been conducting the evaluation • We anticipate continuing effortfor 3-4 more years

  4. Funding • Original MMP funding from NSF • started in 2003 • currently in 6th year • MMP Phase II funding from NSF • awarded last fall for 3 years • Heavy focus on research and evaluation • Governor’s Office • Provides funding for releasedMTL positions

  6. So what? All of these funding sources carry and expectation of external evaluation AND… Documenting success helpssecure additional support

  7. Strategies • Integrate evaluation from multiple funding sources • Expand activities to include more/all schools—more case study schools and LOTS more Social Network Analysis • Update some of our evaluationquestions to address newissues

  8. MMP Online Survey • Ongoing since Spring 2005 • Updated and Simplified for 2009 • Examines perceptions about things that are important for improving mathematics teaching and learning • Results have helped identifyfactors that are related to improved student achievement

MMP Online Survey • MTLs, Math Teachers, Learning Team Members • MTLs will take the survey today!http://www2.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/survey/mmp.htm • Schedule a time at your school for other staff to take it! It takes about 20-30 minutes • Survey will be open fromApril 1 - May 22 • All responses are kept confidential!!!!!

MKT Assessment • This is the “math test” that you all take at the start of each year • We are recruiting 100 teachers from across the district to take the test this year. • Our focus is on teachers in grades 2 and higher because results from these teachers can be most directly related to WKCE scores • Teachers are paid to take this test—2 hours at the PTC Rate

MKT Assessment • The test will be offered on several dates in MayMay 12 3:30-5:30May 19 4:30-6:30 (late dismissal)May 20 3:30-5:30June 2 3:30-6:30 (make up) • Teachers must sign up to take the test athttp://www.hanssenconsulting.com/survey.html • Teachers have until April 24 to sign up—they will be notified on May 1 if selected

Social Network Analysis • SNA documents and measures the nature and strength of communication and collaboration networks • We are particularly interested in interactions between math teachers, MTLs, other administrators, and district personnel • SNA results have been shown to positively correlate with student achievement—a result that has been recognized by the Superintendent and NSF

Social Network Analysis • We are asking ALL schools to complete the SNA survey • MTLs, Math Teachers, Learning Team Members • Self-administration packets with business reply envelopes are provided • Results are kept strictly confidential!!!!!! • Your principal has been informed andcooperation requested

SNA Self-Administration • What’s in the packet? • Instructions and FAQs (blue sheet) • Data transmittal form (green sheet) • Surveys (30 copies provided) • Business Reply Envelope • Suggested administration at a regular staff meeting; 10-15 minutes • Collect the surveys—put them inthe envelope and send to us!
