  3. Definition of Sanctification • Sovereign act of God • He sets apart a person, a place, or an object for Himself • To accomplish His purpose in the world • Isaiah 66:17 • John 17:19 • Used with reference to God. • Ezekiel 36:23

  4. Preparatory Sanctification • Initial sovereign work of God before any experience in the life of the person who is to be sanctified. • I Peter 1:2 • Election and Foreknowledge are of necessity the preparatory work of God prior to experiential Sanctification • Jeremiah 1:5

Positional Sanctification • Apostasy or falling away • The apostle Paul knew that he could be lost after having been saved • 1 Corinthians. 9:27; Philippians 3:12-14 • Gal. 5:4; Heb. 12:15 • Falling from grace • Galatians 5:4, 7; Hebrews 3:6, 12; Hebrews 3:8, 13, 15 • Not enduring but throwing away their confidence • Heb. 10:35-39 • Not bearing fruit • John 15:1-6

  14. Positional Sanctification • Apostasy or falling away • Departing from the faith • 1 Tim. 4:1-3, 6-10 (cf. Col. 2:16-23; 1 Tim. 6:21; Ja. 5:19-20). • Wandering away from the faith because they love money • 1 Tim. 6:9-10 • Being led astray by false prophets and false teachers • 2 Pet. 2:1-22; cf. Eph. 20:28-30; 2 Pet. 3:16 • Being hardened by the deceitfulness of sin • Heb. 3:6-15

Positional Sanctification • Apostasy or falling away • Christians must be diligent • Lest they fall away (Hebrews 3:12; 4:11). • Lest they fall short of God's grace (Heb. 12:15). • To make their calling and election sure (2 Pet. 1:10). • Not to fall from their own steadfastness being led away with the error of the wicked (2 Pet. 3:17-18). • Christians must discern between good and evil (Heb. 5:12-14). • Heb. 6:4-6 • Christians who sin wilfully (Heb. 10:26-31) • Christians who throw away their confidence (Heb. 10:35) • Christians who shrink back to destruction (Heb. 10:39)

Practical Sanctification • Know and reckon that we are dead to sin and self • Romans 6:6 • This is positional truth, and it is important that we continually reckon ourselves dead to self. • The death of Christ not only atones for the penalty of sin, but it has power to deliver us from the practice of sin.

  23. Practical Sanctification • We are exhorted to yield our bodies to God • Romans 12:1 • I Corinthians 6:19, 20 • Romans 6:13 • James 3:5 • Hebrews 10:5 • I Corinthians 9:27 • Total self-dedication to God is the result of self-determined separation to God

  24. Practical Sanctification • Involves the surrender of the will • The will of God is all-important in the life of the child of God • Psalm 119:105 • Romans 8:14 • Ephesians 5:17 • We sanctify ourselves when we walk in the Spirit • Galatians 5:16 • I Thessalonians 5:15 • Ephesians 4:30

  25. Perfect Sanctification • Related to the final perfection of the children of God • It is wholly the work of God • I Thessalonians 5:23, 24 • When Christ returns the believer’s Sanctification will be complete • Jude 1, 24 • The goal God has set for every believer • Ephesians 1:5

Perfect Sanctification • Adoption is not a word of relationship, not the making of a son, but son-placing • Galatians 4:4, 5 • Romans 8:15, 23 • Our glorification • I Peter 5:10 • II Thessalonians 2:13, 14 • Colossians 3:4 • “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is” • I John 3:2

In Closing… • Sanctification is that sovereign act of God whereby He sets apart a person, a place, or an object for Himself in order that He might accomplish His purpose in the world by means of that person, place, or object • There are aspects that are the responsibility of God and aspects that are our responsibility • We must be diligent not to lose our sanctification • The Master Plan of Salvation covers repentance, complete removal of our sins, justification and sanctification

In Closing… • Unless we understand Sanctification in light of Justification we will become inflated by our own self–righteousness, expecting payment for work done in our own name, as if this is how we attain salvation. • If we confuse Sanctification with Justification we will become moralists • I’m better than you because I don’t drink • If we neglect Justification for Sanctification we will become relativists • It doesn’t matter what is true/right as long as I’m good to others.
