Characterization of Molecular Wires (MWs) & Assemblies • Objectives: • Prepare/characterize addressable MW systems • Study contact formation to MW systems • Measure electrical properties by STM/DPSTM • Examine role of defects/deformations on transport • MWs assembly and formation of device structures • Approach: • Synthesize, purify & characterize different MW systems • Test ability to process, image & manipulate MWs by SPM methods • New probe methods for electrical/mechanical characterization • Development of low-noise electronics for fA current measurements • Accomplishments and Impact: • Characterized Mo6Se6 MW system (purity & processing) • Individual 0.6nm diameter MWs, >10m lengths • Measurements of mechanical properties • Metallic wires with well-defined Ohmic behavior • Readily assembled in structures (facile sliding & bending) • NT- Mo6Se6 hydrids likely to have interesting properties Boland – UNC Chapel Hill
