Around the Document • Heading or Sub-heading is the title of a piece of work or a section, chapter, or page. Headings or sub-headings divide or categorize the subject matter of a piece of writing. • Footnote is an additional detail or comment that is added at the bottom of a page to give further information about something mentioned in the text above.
Before the Text • Preface is an introductory section at the beginning of a book or speech that comments on aspects of the text such as the writer’s intentions; a preface introduces the text. • Foreword is an introductory note, essay, or chapter in a book that is often written by somebody other than the author. • Prologue is an introductory passage or speech before the main action of a novel, play, or long poem; a preliminary event that leads to something more important.
With the Text • Sidebars provide supplementary information that is printed alongside a featured story or text. • Charts are diagrams or tables displaying information. • Graphics are visual illustrations or photographs.
After the Text • Afterword is the end section or short concluding section added at the end of a literary work, which may be either an epilogue (short chapter or section at the end of a literary work, sometimes detailing the fate of the characters) or a commentary of some kind. • Bibliography is a list of books or articles that were consulted or that are about a particular subject; the bibliography appears at the end of a book or other text.
