Five types of conflict Goal: What is conflict? Can I name the five types?
What is conflict? • When an author begins a story, he/she chooses a protagonist. Think about our class read aloud…who is the protagonist? • The author then develops some sort of problem for the protagonist to confront. • What is the problem our protagonist is facing? • This “problem” is the story’s conflict and there are 5 to choose from.
What are the five different types? • The first conflict is: Person vs. Person: The character battles another character Batman must fight The Joker
The conflict is: Person vs. Fate: The character battles an unsolvable problem It was Anikan’s fate to become Darth Vader.
The conflict is: • Person vs. Self: • The character battles a Problem within him/herself. The Grinch’s ultimate battle is within himself as he learns to love Christmas.
The conflict is: Person vs. Society The character battles the beliefs of a large group of people Katniss and Peeta must fight in the games and against The Capitol or society that believe it’s okay to make children fight to the death.
The conflict is: Person vs. Nature: The character battles a force in nature. Tom Hank’s character must survive on a cruel and remote island for four years.
