Confucianism and Filial Piety Chapter 5, Section 2
The 5 human relationships Confucius believed there were 5 key relationships:
Unequal, but reciprocal • The 5 relationships are unequal • However, those in power still must reciprocate respect • Both people in the relationship must follow their duties to each other
Filial Piety • The idea of loyalty that borders on religious grounds • Subordinates were to show piety to their superiors • Must do this to be virtuous • Example: Children must show extreme respect to their parents
Confucius said… When your father is alive observe his intentions. When he is deceased, model yourself on the memory of his behavior. If in three years after his death you have not deviated from your father's ways, then you may be considered a filial child. ("Confucian Teachings" 20).
Dear Confucius… • You will be given a letter written to Confucius that exemplifies a problem in one of the 5 human relationships. • Read the letter and follow the directions at the top of the letter. • DO NOT write on the paper I give you. Write your response on a separate sheet of paper. • Remember to consider the duties each person in the relationship must follow. Compromise and respect are important!
