  2. n o w . . . m o r e t h a n e v e r 45 CARING YEARS DEAR FRIENDS, As the people and the state of Pakistan bravely confront the unprecedented challenge of overcoming Covid-19, the orphaned and abandoned children of SOS Children’s Villages urgently need your support in 2020. Now...more than ever. W With new, pressing requirements for philanthropic lar- gesse to take care of daily wage-earners and others sud- denly without income, there is an increase in requests and appeals. m Establish centers of excellence for the most vulnerable in any society – children without parental care. I s s I o n Yet the children of SOS deserve even greater attention at this critical time. Unlike most of us who are privileged to have a sense of inherited, multi-generational continuity in ancestry and memory, virtually none of our SOS children have a similar sense of continuity. Their memories were shaped by 4 terrible Ds: danger, disruption, dislocation, disadvantage. v I s I o To provide a safe and nurturing environment for the children in our care to grow to their full potential. We equip them to support themselves before they leave. n The pandemic has int The pandemic has introduced a new external threat --- in response to which each child and each Village unit is enforcing meticulous safety and protective measures. Thus Thus at SOS, old and new threats are replaced by loving care --- from an adopted mother, children who become affectionate brothers and sisters, quality education and gentle, firm nurturing, with practical preparation for a productive adulthood. To enable a new beginning for a secure, purposeful life for each individual . For For the community at large, we undertake to establish Schools up to HSC level and set up Technical Training Institutes so that many more underprivileged children and youth may benefit. Y Your invaluable support alone makes it possible for this crucial process to be sustained. While we reiterate our sincere thanks for your kind attention, all of us at SOS -volunteers, staff, and most of all, mothers and children --- look forward to your vital contribution before and during Ramazan in 2020. Wishing you safety and good health, Senator (r) Javed Jabbar Senator (r) Javed Jabbar Chairman, SOS Children's Villages of Sindh.

  3. c h i l d r e n ’ s c o v i l l a g e s a n d v I d - 1 9 Since the Covid-19 Pandemic, our three Villages and Youth Homes in Karachi,Jamshoro and Khairpur, are in complete lockdown. Our Our commitment to provide quality care, in a safe and healthy environment, remains paramount during this crisis. Our teams are working tirelessly to ensure chil- dren’s safety whilst maintaining an active lifestyle with social distancing. Also ensuring a healthy, vitamin rich diet to keep their immunities high. With relevant information to guide us through this pan- demic, mothers and caregivers are being kept motivated and well informed regularly. Medical Centre Karachi Village: located in the Karachi Vil- lage premises has a part time doctor. She not only looks after our children and staff but also women and children of the area. Despite the lockdown an adequate supply of medicines is maintained.

  4. The SOS School Malir Offers quality education, with a reasonable fee structure, to over 1,700 children (2 shifts). The School offers extracurricular activities and has had exceptionally good results in the Matriculation Examination for the last many years. The School was amongst the award-winning schools in a competition held by the British Council.

  5. Sadly COVID-19 has changed everything for everyone. Closed since end February, this academic year is full of uncertainties. Because our school is for children from less advantaged families, we are not very optimistic about parents being able to pay the fees for the next few months. W We employ 113 teachers plus staff at the School, and the salaries disbursed each month amount to over Rs.3 million. Generally, the school operates on a break-even basis. The Technical Training Institute Korangi App Approved by the City & Guilds Institute of London as well as of The National Vocational & Technical Training Commission of Pakistan for advanced courses provides free basic skill training in multiple fields to about 1,200 youth annually. The TTI SOS /INFAQ provides unemployed youth a skill to become breadwinners for their families. At At the TTI 26 trainers are employed. Their monthly salaries are Rs.0.7 million supported by donations/sponsorships. SOS has decided that no staff will be laid off. The hard reality is that expenses need to be met by SOS. "And that's where caring citizens such as your esteemed self can give invaluable help.”

  6. l o o k I n g a h e a d The School in Khairpur: constructed with the solid support of the Sindh Government and generous donors, the School was to open soon. After Covid-19, we will go ahead with renewed zeal. Youth Home in Khairpur: Renovation of an old house allotted by the Sindh Government was underway. Completion was expected in May is now stalled. It will accommodate 25 youth from the Khairpur Village. “Together,we can do it!” Home Home for children of single working women in Karachi: 33 children of single mothers from disadvantaged families in our care are presently housed in rented accommodation. Plans are to house them in our own premises eventually.
