Although living at home can save lots of money, living full-time in a community of similarly aged students will allow you to thrive socially, as well. Also, living in student housing will allow you to take advantage of many new opportunities.

Going to a university or college that happens to be near your home gives you the luxury to choose between staying home or living in student housing, like a Durham College or UOIT residence. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it pays to weigh in on those. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of living at home and choosing to move to student housing:
What are the Pros and Cons of Living at Home? The most obvious benefit of staying home while attending school is you get to keep your room. There’s no place like home, they say. You get to stay in your comfort zone and not have to miss your folks, your pets, and your friends. Of course, you also get to continue enjoying home cooked meals. Another advantage is you get to save money by not having to pay room and board.
However, staying at home also means you don’t get to experience the freedom or independence that you would otherwise have if you chose to move to a student residence like UOIT or Durham College housing. And without change of location, you might feel like you're still in high school. You also might not make as many new friends or have the same experiences as you would when you’re in a student community.
What are the Pros and Cons of Living in Student Housing? The first thing that comes to mind when moving to student housing is freedom. Yes, there will be times when you’d be feeling homesick, but you get to grow and become more independent. You will be meeting new people from different places, enjoying all the activities in the community, and gaining a whole lot of new experiences.
On the other hand, living away from home can be a bit costly as you would have to pay for room and board in addition to your tuition. You will also be doing your own laundry, cooking your own food or buying it. You would no longer be enjoying the comforts of being at home, and you might need to adjust to having a roommate.
Whether it is better for you to continue living at home or moving to student housing will ultimately be up to you. There is actually no right or wrong decision, but you do need to weigh in on all the factors and choose what’s best for you.
