Find the quotation, then write a sentence about each point Before you start looking for quotations: Read it twice and try and describe in a paragraph what Ruskin sees going on in the painting. What would you say was the purpose of this extract, and why? • What word most shows Ruskin’s admiration for the picture? • Find words which Ruskin uses to emphasise the large scale of what is happening. Why does he do this? • Why does Ruskin use alliteration? • Ruskin repeatedly uses visual imagery. Give some examples and explore why. • Find a metaphor in the text with ominous qualities. • Why does Ruskin strongly contrasting words about the painting? • Ruskin coined the term ‘pathetic fallacy’. Can you find any instances of that in this piece of writing? Now consider whether you have read anything that might be compared to this (this is the purpose of you Wider Reading).
