What would you say was the purpose of this extract, and why? • What word most shows Ruskin’s admiration for the picture? • Find words which Ruskin uses to emphasise the large scale of what is happening. Why does he do this? • Why does Ruskin use alliteration? • Ruskin repeatedly uses visual imagery. Give some examples and explore why. • Find a metaphor in the text with ominous qualities. • Why does Ruskin strongly contrasting words about the painting? • Ruskin coined the term ‘pathetic fallacy’.
