Information about Herefordshire • Population 184,900 • The county has an older age structure than England & Wales as a whole, with 22% of the population aged 65 years or above (40,800 people), compared to 17% nationally. • The county is one of the most rural and sparsely populated in England, • The land use is predominantly agricultural and the county is well known for its fruit and cider production, and the Hereford cattlebreed • A relatively small Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic population only 6% compared to nationally 18%

  7. Volunteering as a route to employment Employment • Studies have provided evidence of the beneficial effects to the volunteer as a route into employment. Research undertaken in 2009 by Reed, a leading recruitment agency in the UK, found that 84% of Employers see volunteering as a way of spring boarding people into a career, And it’s not just those looking for a new job whose careers can benefit from volunteering. Over 70% of employers believe that those who volunteer have a better chance of earning a higher salary and gaining promotion.

Hereford Volunteer Centre • 1 of 300 volunteer centre throughout England (although recently due to funding pressures a number have closed or reduced in size) • Last year had enquiries from nearly 1700 people interested in volunteering of which almost 50% went on to volunteer. • Currently has over 300 organisations throughout Herefordshire registered as looking for volunteers • Over 660 live volunteering opportunities on database currently www.do-it.org.uk

Good practise with volunteers • Make sure you screen volunteers (if working with vulnerable people or cash etc.) • Ensure they are not out of pocket (expenses) • Make sure there is something for them to do • Ensure there is equipment for them to perform their task • Ensure your insurance covers volunteers • Provide training and references • Thank and value your volunteers
