Transport: All the different mechanisms used to guaranty an adequate flow of goods in an operation. GOAL Right good Right place Right time
Freight characteristics: • Good condition of boxes or packages. • Adequately sealed and marked. • Clear identification. • Numbered by quantities: 1/50, 2/50... • Rate volume/weight for each of the units. • Insured according to the real value.
Criteria to select vehicles: • Working range • Loading capacity • Availability of space • Fuel consumption • Parts availability and easy maintenance • Easy driving • Route limitations
Lorry fleet: • Depends on the quantity of goods • Time needed for travelling including on and off loading • Freighting capacity of the lorries • Number of trips = Time available / trip duration • Number of freights = Total freight / Capacity per lorry • Number of lorries = Number of freights / Number of trips
Lorry fleet management: • One person responsible per vehicle (Driving license) • Maintenance log book per vehicle: Daily and periodic inspection • Movement log book: Origin, destination, kilometres and refuelling • Vehicle insurance • Each vehicle: Cleaning set, spare parts, tools, safety triangles, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, communication device, map, torch, cloths, food and water • Fleet manager: Documentation control
Factors to take into account for transport: • Freight dimensions and weight • Distance • Time available • Freight capacity of available means • Transport costs
Transport by helicopter: • Rapid or complex evacuations • Very limited priority loading • Access to difficult areas
