10.4 Political and Social Changes England’s House of Parliament
Magna Carta In 1215, Nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Carta, one of the first documents that protects the rights of the people. This document changed England in many ways.
Effects of Magna Carta • Required king to honor certain rights • Habeas corpus: people couldn’t be kept in jail without a reason. They had a right to a trial. • Everyone had to obey the law – even kings. • A council (made up of nobles, knights, and even towns leaders) that advised the kings, Parliament, was developed to limit the power kings had. • Judges needed to be free of royal control and this was the key step to bringing democracy to England
Hundred Years’ War • Between France and England • Lasted a little over 100 years • At first English armies did well – but with the help of a young French peasant girl, Joan of Arc, who rallied her fellow Frenchmen, the French drove the English out of France. • RESULTS of the war: • English Parliament’s power grew and King lost power (king needed Parliament’s permission for $ to pay for war) • French King’s power grew (the King and his nobles bonded and they supported their king more after war)
Black Death … or Black Plague Europe lost over 1/3 of its population to the Black Death from 1347-1351
Black Death Causes Effects The sudden loss in population changed Europe drastically. Manor system fell apart Peasants now had services that were in high demand and could receive payments Once they earned $ they moved to bigger cities leaving the manors • Came from Central and eastern Asia on boats that traders sailed. • Rats carried the disease • Fleas bit the infected rats and then passed it to humans through flea bites… • Yuk! • Different forms of the disease – some were deadlier than others
