AHSGE Standard 2 Describe cell processes necessary for achieving homeostasis, including active and passive transport, osmosis, diffusion, exocytosis, and endocytosis.
Standard 2: Vocabulary • Homeostasis: process of maintaining stable internal environment • Active transport: energy-requiring process that moves material across a cell membrane • Passive transport: process that moves material across a cell membrane without the use of energy • Osmosis: diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
Diffusion: movement of molecules from area of high concentration to areas of low concentration • Exocytosis: process where cell releases large amounts of a substance. • Endocytosis: process of taking material into the cell through a pocket in the cell membrane. • Isotonic: when two solutions are of the same strength; example- kool-aid • Hypotonic: a diluted solution; watered down tea • Hypertonic: a concentrated solution; example- frozen fruit juice

Identify these cells first, then tell whether they are prokaryote or eukaryote.
