What are the factors affecting the appearance of impact craters and ejecta? In 2009 NASA launched the LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite) with the primary purpose of detecting water in the moon. The satellite orbited the Earth and moon. On the final approach to the moon, the rocket was programmed to separate from the satellite and impact the moon October 9, 2009. The resulting crater was relatively small and the plume was nearly 6 miles above the lunar surface. Within minutes after the impact the satellite traveled through the plume and relayed information back to scientists on earth about what was discovered in the plume. Scientists were unable to observe the impact from Earth because of the atmospheric conditions on earth along with the location on the moon of the impact.
