QUALITY OF PHYSICS INFORMATION SOURCES – WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO INDIAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICS Dr. Gayatri Paul Senior Documentation Assistant Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science Kolkata – 700032 And Dr. Swapan Deoghuria Scientist - III Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science Kolkata – 700032
Plan of the talk • Background • The Journal : Indian Journal of Physics • Objective • Methodology • Findings • Future Scope • Conclusion • Acknowledgement
Background • Paradigm shift in the field of journal publication : merger, acuisition, monopoly business • Increasing number of journals : 28,100 active scholarly peer-reviewed journals in August 2012 • Journal – pride of an academic organization • Journal performance : Credibility, circulation, accessibility, impact factor etc.
Indian Journal of Physics- Some facts • Popular and oldest Physics Journal in India • Sir C. V. Raman was the founder and first editor • Official publication of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) • Published in Print form (since 1926) and Online from 2009 • Average Impact Factor is 1.785 in 2012 • The journal is devoted to the publication of original scientific research results in the form of full papers and short notes
Indian Journal of Physics- Branches of physics covered • Astrophysics • Atmospheric and Space physics • Atomic & Molecular Physics • Biophysics • Condensed Matter & Materials Physics • General & Interdisciplinary Physics • Nonlinear dynamics & Complex Systems • Nuclear Physics • Optics and Spectroscopy • Particle Physics • Plasma Physics • Relativity & Cosmology • Statistical Physics
Objectives To study the Indian Journal of Physics in Quality of Physics Information Sources through: • Ratio of articles published and articles cited • Year wise analysis of citation • Affiliation pattern of the citing authors • Subject area of the published articles • Geographical distribution of the contributors • Analysis of the pattern of citing journals
Methodology • Research articles published during the period 2007-2012 and cited subsequently (up to March, 2013) were considered. This 6 year period is arbitrary. The idea behind that a scientific paper got maximum citation within 5 years. • Citation information collected from online citation database of Scopus of Elsevier and Web of Science of ISI Web of Knowledge. • Primary data recorded, tabulated and analysed as per citation year, cited journals, affiliation of the authors and subject area of citation.
Future scope • Archiving of back volumes (1926 – 2008) • Keeping the archive in institutional repository for free and open access • Language editing support for contributors of non English speaking countries like China and middle east • Exchange program with other journals published by learned societies
Conclusion • This paper attempts to judge the publication’s quality rather than the individual articles. • In Indian context it is one of the best physics journal but still lagging behind other leading Physics journals published from USA/European country. • Over the last five years Impact factor is steadily increasing which is a positive aspect of the journal. • After a co-publishing agreement with a reputed commercial publisher (Springer) in 2009, it is now easily accessible both in online and offline which will increase citation in the coming years.
Acknowledgement • I would like to thank my colleague Dr. Gayatri Paul, co-author of this paper who mainly collected data and analyzed them.
