Rounding • Rounding is the process of changing some digits to zeros in order to increase or decrease the value of a number. • It seems complicated but I promise it is not.
Example : • Round 5,784 to the nearest ten. • Step 1: Underline the digit that is in the tens place, in this case 8. • 5,784
Step 2: Find out the value of the digit 8 in. 5,784 • As the digit 8 is in the tens place, it’s value is 80.
Step 3: Draw a number line and locate the next ten. 5,780 5,790
Step 4: Observe the digit that is in the right side of the digit you are rounding. 5, 7 8 4
If the digit is : • 5,6,7,8 or 9 the number goes up to the next ten. In this case to 5,790
If the digit is : • 4,3,2,or 1 the number remains in the same ten. In this case 5,780.
In this case as the digit 4 is the digit to the right side of the digit you are rounding. 5,784 • The number in the tens place remains the same. 5,780
