1. Introduction to Excelon Prework HBS Global Training @ MN01
3. Prerequisites for attending This class assumes that:
a student has a thorough understanding of Networking and the LON technology
the student needs to understand at least 1 Lon Network Management tool (i.e. CARE 5, Lon Maker for Windows)
all prework has been completed
4. Prework Objectives upon completion of this presentation the student should be able to…
…define the purpose of the Excelon software
…name a major advantage of the Excelon tool
…list the major functions and explain their purpose
…name the document that references to hard- and Software requirements, System requirements etc.
…install and register Excelon software
…list different Network Interface cards for Excelon to access the LON bus
…list NI application setting for proper usage of
CARE & Excelon •Rapid Balance •E-Vision
…list different common Honeywell systems for which Excelon could be used as a diagnostic tool
…list the steps necessary to install and use the PCC 10 NI card
…check the status of the PCC10 NI card, reset and restart the card
…identify the different panes and the status line in the Excelon software
…locate and use the Excelon online Help function

7. Major Functions
8. Why would I want to…
…browse the Lon Network?
Find nodes in LON network and display them in a convenient explorer tree structure
Find all LON nodes in all domains
Evaluate whether or not the principle network design matches the actual installation
Find nodes that are not commissioned or incorrectly commissioned (Ghosts, Zombies)
Online view nv’s of nodes, node properties as well as find existing bindings
…determine the actual and average Network traffic load?
Network traffic load can have a significant influence on System performance!
As per the traffic calculation in the CARE 5 LON class, a network is designed not to exceed sustained 75% bandwidth load on a given channel
Possible peak load is 150 messages per second for a TP-FT 10 channel (800 for TP-1250 channel)
…identify devices with anomalies?
A single device can have significant influence on total network performance!
The “Automatic Network Diagnostic” wizard provides even inexperienced users a very easy way to get a fundamental overview of the Network performance
It is important to be able to identify devices that i.e.
create unusually high traffic load
have high error rates Major Functions

11. In order to install and properly use the software the following requirements have to be fullfilled:
Hardware Requirements
Minimum Pentium 133 based PC (Min. Pentium 333 strongly recommended)
Graphic board and monitor which support at least 1024x768 pixel (1024 x 768 recommended)
Minimum 32 megabytes (MB) RAM (128 MB recommended)
Minimum* 50 MB free space on PC disk drive (100 MB recommended)
System requirements
Win95, Win98, WinNT4.0, WinME, Win2k or WinXP
LON Network interface
Network interface drivers e.g. SLTALinkManager or LonWorks Plug ‘n’ play in control panel
Network Interface
PCC-10 PCMCIA for notebooks
PCLTA-21 for desktop PCs
U10 / U20 USB interface (No protocol analyzer functionality!)
SLTA-10 for serial PC ports (No protocol analyzer functionality! Phased Out!)
NIC 852 (No protocol analyzer functionality! Node diagnostic only!)
NIC USB (No protocol analyzer functionality! Node diagnostic only!)
L-IP (No protocol analyzer functionality! Node diagnostic only!)
PC requirements
12. Installation of Excelon
With the current release of CARE (5.01.01) the Excelon software will be automatically installed during CARE installation.
For Software information, order number, licensing etc. please refer to the SRB (software release bulletin).
If you purchased Excelon as a standalone software, you have to follow the following steps:
Unzip the downloaded file
Start Setup.exe
Follow the steps of the installation wizard
Start the software
select the Win Start button and go to “All Programs”
A message window appears:
13. Registration of Excelon
14. Registration of Excelon Upon completion of registration, full use of all features is available.
Without registration, users will have very limited use for evaluation and demonstration purpose only.
15. Registration of Excelon
17. Important:
Unlike other PC equipment, you have to install the driver software for the network interface card first !
obtain the driver software from the manufacturer(www.echelon.com)
install driver first, follow all screen instructions, then insert NI card
Note: Because the Echelon NIC is used the most, this presentation does mention different types to create an awarenes, but procedures will always refer to PCC10 only. For all other NIC and drivers please refer to the appropriate manufacturer documentation.
18. Check the settings of the network card.
Open the windows control panel and select the Lonworks® Plug’n Play tool.
19. Make sure that the NI Application is set to PCC10VNI
20. Diagnostic interface card:
21. If the card is correctly installed, you will receive feedback after pressing the “Test” button.
23. Pittfalls - What if Excelon does not connect to the Network ?
25. Starting with Excelon The main screen is divided into 4 panes and a status line:
Domain tree(Network tree)
NV pane
Node pane
Protocol pane
Status line
26. Domain tree pane
in the Domain (or Network) tree all LON nodes found by the software will show up.
provides an easy overview and the amount of displayed devices can be seen in the status line
NV pane
with a right mouse click on a device in the Domain tree, you can select “browse NVs”. These NVs (including their properties) will then show up in the NV pane.
values can be seen and edited whenever applicable
bindings can be found with the “find binding” function
Node pane
when using the “automatic network diagnostic” function, nodes (and their properties) will show up in this pane
the “traffic-light” color coding gives a very easy overview to the nodes status
Protocol pane
all LON packages are displayed in the protocol pane
Status line
a variety of network parameters are displayed in the status line. Therefore, the status line can give a clue as to how high the network quality is.
parameters include: actual traffic load, average traffic load, total number of devices, amount of traffic using alternate path, etc. Starting with Excelon
