The Discipline of Community: To Bear Each Other’s Burdens Acts 4:32-37
Love in the Jerusalem Church • Deep, intimate oneness (“one heart & soul”) • People more important than things • People taken care of • The discouraged were encouraged • They worked together under authority • Apostolic power is related to caring for others
What did they give? • Money • Property • Encouragement • Time • Hearts
Why are they doing this? • They are Christ’s workmanship, 1 Cor 12:13 • They are following Christ’s example, Jn 13:34 • They are responding to God’s love, 1 Jn 4:19 • They are seeking their true joy, Acts 20:35
Applying the Medicine • If you have too great attachment to things, give them away. • If your heart is closed to your brothers and sisters – spend more time with them. • If you struggle with selfishness and self-centeredness, pour yourself into others. • If you rebel against team-ploughing, join an effort you don’t control. • And always meditate on who you are and who we are in Christ.
