  2. Rules of the Science Lab • 1. Always get teacher permission to begin any lab. • 2. Read ALL procedures carefully, and completely before starting a lab. • 3. Pay close attention to all safety symbols.

  3. Safety Symbols • Eye safety- You must wear goggles appropriately. • 2. Clothing protection - Wear an apron during the duration of the lab. 3. Hand Safety- be aware of other symbols that could affection your hands.

  4. 4. Heating safety- all heated items are to be placed away from the experimenter. Proper attire must be worn during labs with heat. • 5. Electrical- NEVER pull an electrical plug out of the wall by the cord. Keep away from water. • 6. Chemical Safety- Properly mix and store chemicals. Wafting is the only proper way to smell an unknown chemical.

  5. 7. Animal safety- Handle all live specimens with care. Always wash your hands after handling a specimen. • 8. Sharp objects- these are only to be used with extreme care. Never hold an object and cut it, also never cut towards yourself. • 9. Plant safety- the same rules apply to plants as to animals.

  6. Safe labs include: • 1. Permission from the teacher. • 2. Procedure has been completely read thoroughly and completely before beginning. • 3. All clutter has been cleared away and only necessary items are on the lab table. • 4. All safety precautions have been identified and acknowledged. Long hair should always be pulled back, long sleeves rolled up, and shoes laces tied.

  7. 5. Follow your assigned role. • 6. No running or horseplay. • 7. No food or drinks in the lab or room. • 8. If something seems unsafe, get a teacher immediately.

  8. Safety Equipment in the classroom • Goggle sanitizer- sanitizes the goggles after each use. • Emergency shut off valves- turns off gas, electrical outlets, and water in the lab area immediately. • Fire blanket- used to extinguish a fire on a person. • Fire extinguisher- used to extinguish a fire.

  9. Safety shower- ONLY used for hazardous chemical spills. • Emergency Eye wash- will flush chemicals from eyes.

  10. School Safety • Fire drill- leave class in a single file, SILENT line towards the nearest exit. Wait for attendance to be taken. • Severe weather- leave as a class in a silent single file line to assigned area. Listen for the announcements for which position to sit in. You are silent. • Stay in Place: Stay in the classroom with door shut, class continues. • Lockdown: Danger outside the building. Stay in a secure location within the building. • Run, Hide, Fight: There is immediate danger within the building. If possible run towards Indian Trail. If it is too dangerous to run then you need to hide in a secure location. If needed, fighting off the intruder for safety.
