TETRA Data Applicationsfor Gas and OilDubai, September 2013Funk-Electronic Piciorgros GmbHMichael D. Piciorgros (CEO)
Why and not …. P25 DMR WiMAX WiFi GSM, Edge, 2G, 3G, (4G) Other digital Wireless Systems
… because ? Try to compare all technical and commercial aspects of the following presentation with the optional technologies and the decision will be easy!
Typical Requirements for Gas and Oil • Remote measurement of physical values at the Wellheads: Temperature Pressure Flow Rate Alarms • Measurement for Cathodic Corrosion Protection (CP): Voltage Current Alarms • Siren Alarming at Plants Action in Control Direction (from Control Room) • Leak Detection (and other) Alarms Action in Alarm Direction (to Control Room)
SCADA Requirements • Different PLC (RTU) Vendors: Siemens Emerson General Electric Schneider Electric • Different Protocols that are used for different Oil Fields: DNP3, Modbus RTU, Modbus ASCII Sinaut, IEC 60870-5-101 Modbus ASCII ROC, BSAP, ... and more • Number of PLC (RTU) per Application Can differ from 2-3 up to several hundred per Oil Field
CP (Cathodic Protection) Requirements • Low Polling speed: Polling can be one per hour or even less • Direct Access of Voltage and Current from Gas or Oil Pipeline: Low data volume and low data speed application Embedded I/O Requirement from TETRA device
Additional Requirements: • Secured Communication: Authentication Encryption • On Shore and Off Shore Applications (Oil Platforms) • Parallel use of Voice and Data • Wide Temperature operating range • Mixed IP and non IP based Data Communication • Over The Air (OTA) Software Upgrade • Remote Configuration Access to Outstations via WEB Browser
How many Gas and Oil sites can be polled with TETRA? Typically a complete polling cycle for Gas and Oil Application should not last more than 5 minutes. Assuming that a polling cycle with the Modbus RTU or DNP3 protocol over TETRA with SDS lasts one Second, 60 sites could be polled per one minute and 5 * 60 sites = 300 sites in 5 minutes on one (of the four) TETRA time slots When using a TETRA Data Gateway like the TGW-100, multiple polling nodes can use the same TETRA time slot in parallel without reducing the polling rate. And in case that 4 polling nodes will be used, the total number of sites that can be polled in 5 minutes will be: Number of Polling Cycles in 5 minutes = 300 * 4 = 1200 Remark: The 1200 pollings use only one of the four TETRA time slots. Using all time slots would result in 1200 * 4 = 5000 poll cycles within 5 Minutes!
