Learning Objectives • Learn how human resources department’s review resumes today. • Learn how to create a resume when experience is on your side and/or when changing careers and/or industries. • Learn effective search strategies to get the job you want.
The Recession Is OVER!!! • So says the National Bureau of Economic Research, Cambridge, MA • Ended June 2009!

What does the Unemployment Data tell us? • Nationally, over 14 million unemployed and collecting • In Massachusetts, over 300, 000 unemployed and collecting • Massachusetts has borrowed almost 400 million as of August 27, 2010 (1) • All states combined have borrowed almost 40 billion as of August 27, 2010 (1)
Post Recession Turnover • Adecco Survey (April 2010) • 54% of employed Americans are likely to look for new jobs. • 71% of employed 18 to 29 year olds are likely to look. (3) • Deloitte Survey (March 2010) • 52% of executives predict voluntary turnover will increase 12 months after recession ends. • Reasons – employees are mentally and physically fatigued from years of added work, working with less, and fear of layoffs. (4)

Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) and Recruitment Process • First Cut - ATS online answers • Second Cut- Resumes are ranked. HR scans resume in ____? Creates buckets. • Third Cut – HR does in depth resume review of qualified candidates. • Fourth Cut - HR sends to Hiring Manager to decide who to interview.
Applicant Tracking Software and Recruitment Process • Fifth Cut - HR phone pre-screens • Sixth Cut - Interview in HR and Hiring Manager • Seventh Cut - Additional interviews • Eight Cut - References • Ninth Cut - Offer / Negotiations
Resume Urban Myths • TRUE or FALSE • Resumes CAN NOT be no more than two pages. • A one page resume is the BEST. • Resumes NEED to show accomplishments. • Recruiters/Hiring Mgrs. are BIASED when reading a resume. • The most qualified person ALWAYS gets the job. • Cover letters are a WASTE of time . • BACKGROUND is more important than ATTITUDE. • Your resume can EFFECT you from getting a job.
Resume Construction – Do’s • “One Size Doesn’t Fit All” • Have different versions of resume • Study job description and tailor resume to it • Use key words from job description in resume • Use industry vernacular • Build a resume “to be scanned” in ATS
Resume Construction – Do’s • Section 1: Name, Address, Phone #, Email address, Social Networking address • Section 2: Summary Skills/Competencies Statement (use key words and be succinct!) • Section 3: Experience • List companies chronologically (current 1st) • Brief statement about company, job title, and dates (use months) • Accomplishments/Results (not a list of responsibilities) • Use “key words”
Resume Construction - Do’s • Section 4: Education • Did you graduate???? • Section 5: Professional Cert./Licenses • Section 6: Professional Memberships/Assoc. • Alumni Groups, Professional Societies • Other (be careful here!!!) • Section 7: Adjunct Teaching Assignments • Section 8: Publications/Patents • Section 9: Community Volunteer Activities

Resume Construction - Do’s • For multiple page resumes – include header or footer with name and page # • Font (Times New Roman or Arial) • Size (11) • Tailor resume to the job • “KISS” Principle • Accomplishments and Results
Resume Construction – Don’ts • “References available upon request” • Hobbies • Personal Statements …..be cautious • Avid player of dungeons and dragons • Enjoys spectator sports • Psychic • Listing workshops/conferences attended • No fluff
Cover Letters • Keep short, concise, and to the point! • Mimic job description and qualifications. • Do you have a compelling story to tell? • Why are you interested in the job? • What is the company’s ROI if they hire you? • Contact information.
Job Strategies to Find a Job • Network, Network, Network • Est. 60% - 80% are hired through networked opportunities • Do informational Interviews • Have energy when meeting people • Practice your elevator speech • Practice behavioral/situational questions • What to do when pre-screen call comes and you are not prepared?
Resume Review Reality • Your resume is not the most important thing. • You are at the mercy and bias of resume reviewer. • Everyone has an opinion on resume writing. • You must be comfortable with resume. • Have you stayed current and relevant?
