Review: Using a Grid • 1.At the intersection of which two streets is the Church of Santa Rosa? • 2. What is the grid location of San Marcos University? • 3. If you were walking from the Church of La Merced to Trinity Church, what avenue would you walk along? • 4. What street would you take to get from the Church of San Augustin to the Church of Jesus Maria? • 5. If you were telling someone the location of the building where Congress meets, what two streets would you name? • 1. Conde de Superunda & Tacna Ave • 2. D 4 • 3. Cusco Avenue • 4. Camana Street • 5. Ayachucho Street & Huallaga Street
Latitude and Longitude create an imaginary grid on Earth.
Parallels show us the LATITUDE of a location Merdians show us the LONGITUDE of a location Parallels vs Meridians
What are parallels? Parallels are lines that run across the globe horizontally and never meet up with each other. We use parallels to measure latitude. The Equator is O degrees latitude.
The World- Important Parallels • On “The World I” map, complete the following: • 1. Trace the Equator (0º) in RED. • 2. Trace the Tropic of Cancer (23 1/2º N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23 1/2º S) in ORANGE • 3. Trace the Arctic Circle (66 1/2º N) and the Antarctic Circle (66 1/2ºS) in PURPLE • Trace the North Pole (90ºN) and the South Pole (90ºS) in BLUE
What are meridians? Meridians are lines that run from the north pole to the south pole. We measure longitude by using meridians. The Prime Meridian is O degrees longitude.
The World- Important Meridians • On “The World II” map, complete the following: • 1. Trace the Prime Meridian (0º) in RED. • 2. Trace the International Date Line (180º) in GREEN. Be sure to trace it on both sides of your map.
LATITUDE vs LONGITUDE Longitude measures distance EAST and WEST of the Prime Meridian LATITUDE measures distance NORTH and SOUTH of the EQUATOR.
The Prime Meridian and the Equator divide the world into 4 hemispheres.
Prime Meridian
In which two hemispheres do you live?
Citing Latitude & Longitude • Latitude ALWAYS comes before Longitude (Latitude comes first alphabetically too!) • Example: Cairo, Egypt is found at 30°N Latitude, 30°E Longitude • (It is 30°N of the Equator and 30°E of the Prime Meridian)
Finding Latitude • 1)Use the Parallels to find Latitude. 2)Trace a horizontal line from the target city to the right or left of the map. 3)Identify the parallel lines closest to your city and estimate its LATITUDE. 4)Decide if it lies North or South of the Equator.
Finding LONGITUDE • 1)Use the MERIDIANS to find LONGITUDE. • 2)Trace a vertical line from the target city to the top or bottom of the map. • 3)Identify the meridians closest to your city and estimate its LONGITUDE. 4)Decide if it lies EAST or WEST of the Prime Meridian.
A) Letter C lies on the Equator. B) Letter B lies on the Prime Meridian C) Letter F lies at 20°S, 20 °E. D) Letter G lies at 40 °N, 100 °W E) Letter A lies at 20 °S, 100 °E F) Letter E lies at 40 °N, 60 °E Did you get them all right? Answers to map questions
WHERE in the WORLD is Ms. D?A Latitude/Longitude game • Ms. DiLissio is hiding somewhere in your textbook’s atlas! • You may ask her up to 10 yes/no questions to try to find her. • The first person to guess her correct location wins! -Europe (p.512) -Asia (p.516) -Africa (p. 514) -United States (pp 510 &511
