Why Join CSF? • CSF is recognized by colleges and universities throughout California. • Another accolade to add to your repertoire of achievements
Membership • Life sealbearer is awarded to students who qualify in 4 semesters – one of which has to be your senior year. • Students who qualify all six semesters from 10th through 12th grade are considered 100% members and receive a certificate plus all benefits of being a Life sealbearer.
Life Sealbearers receive • Life member pin • Gold seal on diploma • Notation on transcript
Membership Requirements • You must apply every semester starting your 2nd semester of 10th grade ($5 fee if eligible) • CSF points begin with your 1st semester of 10th grade • Following each semester’s grading period students can and must apply for membership. • I will notify you all when applications are due
Chapter #: 1475 • On the application next to current grade level, please indicate what semester you are applying for. • Ex: If you are a 10th grader in 2nd semester, then you are applying for 10th grade in 1st semester • Ex: If you are a 11th grader in 1st semester, then you are applying for 10th grade 2nd semester • Utilize the course list provided to fill out the course grid on the application • List all the courses you have taken for the semester you are applying in the appropriate LIST
No CSF points shall be given for • physical education courses • courses taken in lieu of physical education • Subjects repeated to improve a grade • Courses involving clerking or office/teacher assisting • Courses taken on a pass/fail basis.
CSF points are granted as follows: • A grade of an A = 3 CSF points • A grade of B = 1 CSF points • One additional point shall be granted for a grade of A or B in an Honors course. • Up to a max of 2 such points per semester • A grade of C = 0 CSF points • A grade of D or F in any course, even in one you cannot use to qualify, disqualifies you from membership at the time.
You must… • Earn a minimum of 10 pointsfrom last semester’s grade from which you are applying for. • 7 of the 10 must be from Lists I & II, with a minimum of four from List I. • The remaining points may come from any LIST III) • You MUST use no more than 5 courses to qualify
Membership dues • $5 dollars per semester in which you are applying for membership
Remember!! • Semester membership is based on work done in the previous semester • Membership does not have to be consecutive • You must reapply EVERY semester (I will tell you specific dates)
Community service • Encouraged but not mandatory. However, • Think about college admissions • The monetary awards potentially at your disposal
SEALBEARER AWARD • Advisor and teacher recommendation. Goes to a deserving Sealbearer who: • Demonstrates very high potential • Exhibits exceptional motivation and effort • May be limited by personal or financial limitations/obligations in extracurricular activity participation • Exemplifies CSF, “Scholarship for Service,” even if it is limited to school. • May be overlooked in other awards and scholarships • Can greatly benefit from financial assistance • $1,000 for each regional recipient (5 CSF Sealbearer Award recipients)
Seymour Memorial Award • An adviser-nominated award only. Adviser nominates 2 seal bearers. • Each spring, 10 finalists are selected per region (there are 5 – we are South Central). Each of these individuals receive $2,000. • Then at the regional conference, one of the 10 is selected as the Seymour recipient and receives an additional $3,000.
Michelson Award • For seniors only • Seniors respond to a prompt. Students receive $1,000 for 1000 words. • One senior is selected to win.
New West CSF Scholarship • IN THE WORKS =) • Utilizing the extra funds available from membership dues to award a few recipients with $$$.
