Flow around a cylinder Turbulent flow around a cylinder Wall functions Uin, k and specified • Free flow around a cylinder. • Inlet velocity, Uin = 1.5 m/s. • Cylinder diameter, d = 0.2 m. • Air at ambient temperature, =1.5·10-5 m2/s. • Reynolds number, • Turbulence intensity at the inlet of 2%.
Numerical considerations Turbulent flow around a cylinder • 900 nodes (1672 elements). • Iterative solution process requires approx. 60 MB memory. • Stabilization techniques: • Second order artificial diffusion and first order streamline diffusion for the k and equations. • First order streamline diffusion for the momentum equations.
Results Turbulent flow around a cylinder - Results • Point of seperation shows qualitative good agreement with literature. (120° from the impingement point). • Values of Cp seem to correlate well with experimental data. • The results are easily visualised with the postprocessing functionality built into COMSOL Multiphysics.
