Heart TroubleJohn 13:36-14:31 Be Transformed By Warren W. Wiersbe Chapter 2
Our hearts become easily troubled. John 14:1,27: “Let not your heart be troubled” How did Jesus calm their troubled heart? 6 assurances • You are going to heaven (13:36-14:6) Peter felt like a hero following Jesus to death, but he would deny Him thrice. Heaven is a real place, not a product of religious imagination Heaven is the place where God dwells and where Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father Heaven is described as a kingdom (II Peter 1:11) Heaven is described as an inheritance (I Peter 1:4) Heaven is described as a country (Hebrews 11:16) Heaven is described as city (Hebrews 11:16)
Heaven is described as home (John 14:2) Heaven is described as my Father’s house Father: 53 times in John 13-17 Heaven is a home for God’s children “Home is where when you arrive there, they have to take you in” Robert Frost Mansions (John 14:2) and abode (14:23) Greek word “mone” mean rooms, abiding places Jesus is preparing places for all true believers He was a carpenter (Mark 6:3) John 14:3 – Lord’s return for His people Some go to heaven through death & others will never see death via rapture (I Thess. 4:13-18) Heaven is the place of love and joy Heaven is where there is no death, sorrow, crying, pain, night, etc. (Rev. 21-22)
Heaven is a place where we will enjoy forever Heaven is a real place Heaven is a loving place Heaven is an exclusive place Jesus is the only way to the Father (14:6) He is the way; early name of Christian Faith (Acts 9:2; 19:9, 23; 22:4; 24:14, 22) “No man cometh unto the Father but by me” excludes good works, religious ceremonies, costly gifts, etc. Only one way - Jesus The assurance of a heavenly home helps us to bear joyfully with the obstacles and battles along the way Jesus: Hebrews 12:2 –” Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Paul: Romans 8:18 – “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” 2. You Know the Father Right Now (14:7-11) Know the Father: knows – 14 times with diverse meanings Four levels: Knowing a fact Understand truth behind that fact Relationship: believing in a person and become related to him or her Having a deeper relationship with a person, a deeper communion That I may know Him (Phil. 3:10) Knowing and seeing Jesus was the same as knowing and seeing the Father Burning desire of every believer ought to know God better like Philip We read & study the Word of God so we can know the God of the Word
Believers today haven’t seen the Lord Jesus in flesh (I Peter 1:8), but we see Him and His works in the Word Believe in 14:10 is singular for He was addressing Philip while believe in 14:11 is plural & He addresses all of the disciples It means to go on believing. Let your faith grow The Lord of heaven & earth is our Father (Luke 10:11). Therefore, there is no need for us to have troubled heart for He’s in control 3. You Have the Privilege of Prayer (14:12-15) We must pray in faith (12) Double verily is an encouragement It’s an encouragement that Jesus returns to the Father for there He is interceding for us. “Greater works” initially apply to the apostles. For the believers He works in and through us
Faith & works always go together for it is faith that releases the power of God in our lives. Both love & obedience are part of effective prayer Ps.66:18 –”If I regard inquity in my hear, the Lord will not hear me. We obey because we love Him To keep His commandments means to value, treasure, guard, and do them (John 23:12) Believing prayer is wonderful medicine to soothe a troubled heart (Phil. 4:6,7) We must pray in Christ’s name (13-14) To ask anything of the Father in Jesus’ name means we ask what Jesus would ask, what would please Him & what would bring Him glory by furthering His work. “Whatsoever “ in John 14:13 is qualified by all that God has revealed in His Word about prayer “Anything” in John 14:14, same meaning as above
To know God’s name is to know His nature, what He is, & what He wants to do God answers prayer in order to honor His name We must pray in loving obedience (15) When you love someone, you honor his or her name Love is an important theme. 56 times 4. We have the Holy Spirit (14:16-18) Who the Holy Spirit is Another Comforter Greek word parakeleto (John 14:16, 26;15:26;16:7; I John 2:1) means “Called alongside to assist” Holy Spirit works in us and through us Comfort from two Latin words means with strength True comfort strengthens us to face life Bravely & keep on going instead of soothing Some translations call the Holy Sprit “the Encourager” I John 2:1 - Advocate
Spirit of Truth: Holy Spirit is related to Jesus, the Truth and the Word of God Holy Sprit inspired the Word of God and illumines the Word so that we may understand For the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, we must seek to glorify Christ and make much of the Word of God To be filled with the Spirit is the same to be controlled by the Word The Spirit of truth uses the Word of truth to guide us into the will of God and work of God The Holy Spirit abides (lives) in the believer “Another” means another of the same kind Another Comforter The Spirit of God is God as Jesus is the Spirit dwelt with the disciples and now in them During the Old Testament, the Sprit came upon people & then leave them King Saul (I Sam. 16:14; 18:12) David asked that the Spirit not to leave (Ps. 51:11 “Even though we may grieve the Holy Spirit”) He will never leave us The way we treat the Holy Spirit is the way we treat the Lord Jesus Christ (I Cor. 6:19-20) The way we treat the Bible is the way we treat the Holy Sprit and Jesus Christ
The world cannot receive the Spirit for the world lives by sight and not by faith. Comfortless in John 14:18 means “Orphans” Wherever we go, the Spirit is with us. Why should we feel like orphans? 5. We Enjoy The Father’s Love (14:19-24) “The love of God is she abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us” Romans 5:5 a. There was a past manifestation to the disciples (19-20) Vs. 19 focuses on His resurrection and His appearances to the disciples & other believers The last time the world saw Jesus was when He was taken down & buried. The next time the world sees Him He will comes in power and glory to judge the lost sinners Vs. 20 focuses on the coming of the Spirit at the Pentecost and the oneness of the believers with the Lord Jesus returned to heaven as the exalted Head of the church (Eph. 1:19-23) We are united to Jesus by the indwelling Spirit even though we did not see Jesus after the resurrection
b. There is present manifestation of Himself to believers (v. 21, 23- 24) Repetition of love If we treasure His Word and obey, the Father and Son will share their love with us and make their abode, or home, in us When the sinners trust Jesus, he is born again & the Holy Spirit enters his body immediately He bears witness that he is a child of God. The Spirit will not depart. But as the believer yields to the Father, loves the Word, pray, & obey, deeper relationship with the Father, Son, & Spirit occurs. Salvation means we are going to heaven, but submission means Heaven comes to us. Abraham: Jesus & the two angels, felt right at home Lot: Jesus didn’t go for He didn’t feel right at home there, He sent two angels instead.
C. You Have His Gift of Peace (14:25-31) Shalom – peace; means wholeness, completeness, health, security, prosperity When you enjoy God’s peace, there is joy & contentment It is not the same peace as the world offers a) The world bases the peace on resources while God’s peace depends on relationships b) The world depends on personal ability while Christians depend on spiritual adequacy in Christ c) In the world peace is something you hope or work for while peace is a wonderful gift form God for Christians d) Unsaved enjoy peace in absence of trouble while Christians enjoy in spite of troubles because the presence of the Holy Spirit e) People in the world walk by sight and depends on externals while Christians walks by faith and depend on eternals The Spirit uses the Word to give us peace (14:27), love (15:9-10), and joy (15:11) Jesus assured them that they will see Him again (14:28)
Why should we rejoice when Jesus returned to the Father? Jesus will intercede for us while in heaven as the High Priest (Heb. 2:17-18; 4:14-16) For peace we have the Savior above us, the Spirit within us, and the Word before us. In John 14:30-31, we have two spiritual enemies: The world and devil Father is greater than I (John 14:28) Jesus was here on earth with limit by having a human body. He voluntarily set aside His attributes & submitted himself to the Father. When Jesus returned to heaven, all his attributes & glory returned to Him (17:1, 5) Jesus showed His love for the Father by going to the cross voluntarily
