P4P Results 2009 - 2012 • Capacity-building in agribusiness management and technological innovation, through agreements and contracts, in two countries: Guatemala and Honduras. • In all four CA countries (ES, NIC, GU and HO) the WFP’s purchasing power was used to strengthen and complement initiatives already under way: RED SICTA, 3 SICTA projects (Swiss, IDB, EU, Korea) and national programs. • Actions focused on assessing and strengthening technological, agribusiness capabilities and practices to better link small producer organizations to markets.

  6. P4P Results 2009 -2012 • Regional Evaluation of the P4P carried out in order to improve its performance and strengthen the Project technically and financially (Joint Mission IICA/WFP – 2009). • Progress in Implementing Main Conclusions: • In Progress: Specialized Technical Cooperation from IICA has helped farmer organizations to overcome bottlenecks in aspects related to technological innovation, marketing and partnerships. • Pending: Need for a mutually agreed common approach for regional interventions.

Recommendations • Continuationof jointeffortsonthemessuch as: technologicalinnovation, food safety, postharvesthandling, and entrepreneurial training • Strengthen IICA’s regional relations with the P4P through comprehensive regional initiatives in CA and other regions. • Synergize P4P efforts with IICA projects that focus on basic food crop chains • Jointly construct a mechanism/system of knowledge management that would allow to identify success factors that can be replicated and transfer of innovation to small producers

Recommendations • Improvement of the capacity of producerstodevelopsustainableproductionsystemsincludingincorporation of technologies of minimum and zerotillage • Reduction and management of riskfor smallproducers in the region • Developmentof alternative regional marketsto the WFP togivesustainabilityto the efforts of the programme • Strengthening of the technicalcapacityof serviceproviders (public and private) to transfer innovationtosmallproducers • Analysis of the possibilitytobetterunderstandseedhandling and potentialpostharvestlosses of smallproducers in theregion (FAO).

Recommendations • Regional and hemispheric workshops to disseminate experiences and knowledge in technological innovation and marketing of basic grains. • Formation of National Teams from different institutions (5 people) to provide guidance and ensure the sustainability of the processes. IICA in charge of coordination and technical assistance. • Promote the use of ICT to improve linkages between member countries of the P4P
