University, international and national telecom and IT companies, and Taguspark join to support objectives of parts of the initiatives for the Information Society and create a “Centre of Excellence in Mobility” (LEMe) based on industry and market leadership
Mission • Develop superior competence in mobile technologies, content, and services • Promote Cooperation of specialists, institutions, and interested parties • Provide a unique development and testing laboratory for services and applications
Mission: Competence Develop superior competence in technologies, software, and business aspects relevant to mobile technologies, content, and services • IST – Taguspark to closely work with industry to adapt curricula to current and future requirements • Provide access to technologies and competence • Use laboratory for providing competence development purposes
Mission: Cooperation Creating a network of specialists, institutions, and interested parties where information is freely exchanged to promote innovation • LEMe is open to all interested parties willing to support its goals • Participation in international projects to further the creation of competence and competitiveness • Collaborate with international bodies according to lab strategy
Mission: Laboratory Establish a unique development and testing laboratory for mobile services and applications for the benefit of the entire mobile community • To provide input and to support development of University curricula • Proof of concept testing by academia, in collaboration with industry and SMEs • To demonstrate most recent advances in mobile communications • Generate media opportunities to announce the “Mobile Paradigm”
Objectives 1 • Short-term (2004): • Start operations in January 2004 and 8 members by September 2004 • First review of IST curricula done by March 2004 • Establish a grant + scholarship (20) program in co-operation with domestic bodies (e.g. UMIC) by July 2004 • Laboratory with development and test platforms for Java, OSA/Parlay, Symbian, … operational from August 2004 • Set up the private non-profit association by September 2004
Objectives 2 • Medium-term (2005): • Yearly support to 50 course finalists and 15 graduate (Ms + PhD) thesis by 2005 • To start 10 University/Industry R&D projects (joint teams) • 5 seminars/conferences p.a. on pertaining subjects attended by 50 people each, of which 30% non-University • Annual review of curricula of IST and other Universities
Objectives 3 • Long-term (2007): • Minimum of 20 members in total, among • Universities • multi-national companies • local Portuguese companies • Creation of 3 start-up companies via Incubator of Taguspark or similar
