  1. Editing a Template Using Front Page

  2. Review:Why Have a web Page? • Simplify repetitive tasks. • Provide resources for students and parents. • Establish a web presence. • Save paper with electronic assignments. • Helps you look professional.

  3. We’ll do this the easy way • Instead of having you go though the nitty gritty process of creating an entire website we’ll use a template. • A template is a previously designed blank page that you can edit any way you like! • Front Page will allow you to edit and add items to your page!

  4. Open the Editor • Open Microsoft Front Page XP. This is the version the school has provided to you. • When you log in using your faculty ID a network drive is automatically created for you that links to your faculty web page. • Open the file named index.htm that should already be on your network drive.

  5. The provided template • This is the template provided. You can modify it any way you want. • To get started editing we’ll show you a few of the basics.

  6. Lets do some more with hyperlinks!

  7. Adding a Hyperlink • Select the text or image that you want to add a hyperlink to. • Click on the Hyperlink icon on the standard toolbar. • The create hyperlink dialog box will open. Type in the URL  that you want to link to in the URL box.  • Click on OK. • Your text or image will now be hyperlinked. When in the preview mode or after you publish you will see that when you click on the text or image it will jump to the URL you typed in.

  8. Adding a Hyperlink

  9. Now try! • Add a hyperlink to your template. On the right hand side under “Links” Type “District 321.” Then hyperlink to the district site.

  10. Adding a Picture • Go to Insert on the menu bar and go down to Picture and click on From File. • The Picture dialog box will open.   • Click on the file folder with the magnifying glass in the bottom right hand corner. The Select File dialog box will open.

  11. Click on the file for the image you want to use. You can use various file types but once inserted into FrontPage they will be converted to either JPEG or GIF. Click on OK. Your image will be added to your page.

  12. Now Try! • Each faculty member has a digital photo of themselves in .jpg format inside the folder named facultypics on the h: drive. • The photos are listed alphabetically by last name. Find your picture and use it to replace the stick figure default. • Delete the stick figure default and use INSERT PICTURE from FILE.

  13. Adding a Picture Here is my example, yours should have your own picture

  14. Save your changes • Were now going to save your changes. • Save your document as a new name. Change the name from index.htm to yourlastnamefirstinitial. • Example Andersonk.

  15. Add a few more elements • Add some basic text to the body of your document. • Tell a little about yourself as a teacher. List your hobbies or make any other changes you would like. • Your page will be edited further in a moment.

  16. Publishing to the Web • When you publish something to the web there are certain formats you’ll want to use to make sure people can view the file. • The best two are .html (a web page) or .pdf (a portable document file).

  17. Publishing to the Web • HTML: HTML is the format the internet uses. • Advantages: If a file is saved in HTML it can be opened directly in almost any browser. • Disadvantages: The intended formatting may not always be preserved.

  18. Publishing to the Web • PDF: PDF is a portable document file. • Advantages: If a file is saved in PDF its formatting, margins, pictures, tables and other elements will almost always be preserved perfectly and look exactly the same on any computer screen or when printed. • Disadvantages: The computer viewing the pdf file must have a .pdf viewer such as Adobe Acrobat reader installed or the file cannot be viewed at all.

  19. Publishing to the Web To save as .html. • Open any document you have created in Microsoft Word • Go to file and SAVE AS WEBPAGE. • Save the file to your drive as any name you can remember (no spaces).

  20. Publishing to the Web To save as .html.

  21. Publishing to the Web To save as .pdf. • Open any document you have created in Word but open it in “Open Office” (installed on all school computers for this purpose –Word files can be opened in Open Office). • Go to file and EXPORT AS PDF. • Save the file to your drive as any name you can remember (no spaces).

  22. Publishing to the Web To save as .pdf.

  23. You have everything you need! • You now have everything you need to create a professional-looking website from a template. • Start by taking old class items and saving them as .html or pdf files. Then hyperlink them to your main page!. • You will be amazed how easy and fun this is to make a great looking site!

  24. Example This is just an example. You can put anything you want in place of what I have here. You can move the picture, relocate the links, anything you want!
