‘Safety in the storm’ Psalm 62
(1) Facing the fiercest storm 3 How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down – this leaning wall, this tottering fence?4 Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.
(2) Security in the storm 5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I shall not be shaken.7 My salvation and my honour depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. 6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I shall not be shaken.
(3) The view from the shelter • The danger of placing our trust in people • The futility of trusting wealth • The realisation that ultimate power and love are to be found in God alone 9 Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie.If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath.10 Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods;though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. 11 One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard:‘Power belongs to you, God,12and with you, Lord, is unfailing love’;and, ‘You reward everyone according to what they have done.’
(4) The fulfilment in Christ • ‘That rock was Christ’ (1 Corinthians 10 v4) • In Jesus, we see the power and love of God in human form • We are to build our lives on him, and his word……
Luke 6 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When the flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.’
What are you building your life on at the moment? • The only foundation that lasts for eternity is on Jesus Christ
