What do you feel are the most critical issues keeping Lebanon High School students from being successful? • Family Factors • Lack of structure at home • School is not a priority at home • Lack of parental involvement • Lack of parental direction • Dysfunctional Families • Low expectations • Lack of role role-models • Effect of poverty • Student Factors - Habits • Poor attendance • Lack of work ethic • Apathy • Lack of respect for authority • Idea that success comes without work • Student Factors – Skills • Lack time management skills • Do not know how to prioritize • Poor study skills/study habits • Lack of communication skills • Inability to set goals • Lack conflict management skills • Competing interests • Student Factors – Developmental Issues • Students need career information • Students lack vision • Students need to see the “big picture” • Low self-esteem • Peer pressure

  2. How can the Counseling Department address these challenges? Student Interventions • Identify those in need and intervene • Make students aware of counselors role • Focus on successful kids as well as unsuccessful kids • Meet with students to develop a four-year plan Parent Interventions • Educate the parents • Increase parental involvement Programming Interventions – workshops, classroom lessons, • Time management • Goal setting • Stress management • Social skills lessons • Job fair • In-service on how to motivate students • Invite former students to speak to current students

Skills • Personal responsibility • Goal setting • Social skills • Basic manners • Test taking skills Career Information • Careers that do not require college • How education is connected to careers • Career choices • Real life experiences • Interview skills • Correlation between education and jobs

  4. How can this be addressed by the Counseling Department? Programming Interventions • Small group sessions • Mini-lessons • Shadowing • Career lessons • Invite speakers to talk about careers/interview skills • Invite employers to talk about career success

Comments • Increase parental involvement in course selection process / Meet with students and parents to choose courses • Bring in speakers to assist with issues discussed • Increase teacher awareness across the board to teachers regarding types of resources for mental health and other student issues. • Mandatory student-parent career counseling • Increase services for drug and alcohol assistance • Train students how to be mentors for other students • Student credits earned- Make this information more readily available • Place students in classes based upon interests not availability not convenience
