  1. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and the AF Passive Military Shipping Label Test Mark Reboulet AFMC LSO/LOA 937 257-7181 Mark.Reboulet@wpafb.af.mil

  2. Overview • Status of AF Active RFID Utilization • AF Passive Military Shipping Label (MSL) Test Overview • Project Goals & Benefits • Hardware • Short Term Architecture

  3. AF Active RFID Utilization • Afloat Pre-positioned Fleet (APF) • Tagged (Active) all containers last three years at Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal (MOTSU) • In process of integrating APF application to function with AF ammunition management system • Intra-Theater Munitions Movements • Currently fielding leave-behind mobile capability to tag and track munitions containers in conjunction with TurboCADS 04 exercise • Depot-level Gyro Repairs • Currently installing RFCode at Robins AFB to support tracking gyros through depot repair process

  4. AF Passive MSL Pilot Overview • Short Project Summary: The pilot will demonstrate the ability of a prototype EPC (Electronic Product Code) Class 0 passive RFID Military Shipping Label (MSL) to automatically record transportation event transactions and associate them to content level detail in Department of Defense (DOD) In-transit visibility system with minimal human intervention. • Project Location(s): Multiple Continental United States (CONUS) AF and Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) sites for tag creation, Dover-Ramstein consolidation/airlift, multiple Outside Continental United States (OCONUS) destinations

  5. Project Goals and Benefits • Project Goals • Demonstrate value of passive RFID in the Defense Transportation System (DTS) • Assist Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) in shaping/validating Passive RFID policy • Improve efficiencies in in-transit (ITV) processes • Enable mapping of content level data to shipments within existing ITV systems • Project Benefits • Analysis of passive RFID data quality and integrity • Validation of passive RFID data capture processes

  7. Hardware • Matrix Class 0 Tag • Portable readers/Portals • Hand held reader/writer • Matrix fixed readers with various portal designs (Side mount, overhead, doorway) • Printer • Intermec PM4i to print the MSL on Matrix Class 0 label stock

  8. Dover Site Survey, Truck Dock Truck Dock Door Installation - Doorway Portal Portal will read box tags as cargo arrives.

  9. Dover Site Survey, Staging Area Bay Door Installation – Side Mount Portal Portal will read box tags as cargo moves into staging area.

  10. Dover Site Survey, Pallet Build Installation for New Side of Cargo Tent 2 – Stand-alone Portal Portal will read box tags as cargo moves to pallet build station.

  11. Dover Site Survey, Pallet Capping Installation for Old Side of Cargo Tent 3 – Stand-alone Portal Portal will read box tags as pallets are aggregated. Pallet tags will be printed and placed on placards. Pallet tags will be read as pallets depart.

  12. Project Timeline

  13. Short Term Project Deliverables / Products • Operational ITV capabilities • Analysis reports • Data completeness • Data quality • Data timeliness • Briefings • Project Plan • Project Execution Status • Project Evaluation • Recommendations • Implementation strategies

  14. Phase II • Integrate read and write capability with: • Nodal AISs (Gates, CMOS) • Logistics Data Warehouse (DAAS) • Investigate unit move (passive to active process) • Investigate retrograde from theater • Investigate UPS and/or FedEx participation
